Tag Creation

Tag creation is a vital step if you plan on going door-to-door, making calls, or sending texts. Tags help you organize and customize data points to meet your targeting needs. There are a variety of ways to utilize tags, such as collecting grassroots data or importing outside lists into your database. Below are some examples of where tags appear in the Portal:

  • Search > Tags Tab: Pull a list of individuals assigned to tags in Basic or Advanced Search.

  • Contacts Management > Tags Tab: Sort lists based on tags applied to individuals.

  • Surveys > Scripts: Assign a tag to survey answers.

  • Text > Text Actions/Responses: Assign tags to text responses.

Create a Tag Category

A tag category is where all individual tags are stored. It must be created prior to creating individual tags. Common examples of categories may include:

  • Candidate Support

    • (tags: Support, Oppose, Undecided)

  • Issues

    • (tags: Economy, Education, Environment, etc.)

  • Yard Sign

    • (tags: Yes - wants yard sign; No - does not want yard sign)

Tag Categories can be easily accessed from the '+' (Shortcuts) button by selecting 'Tag Category.' A sidebar panel will appear on the right to allow you to input a Category Name and optional description.

Create a Tag

Tags exist within categories. As you create tags for surveys, we recommend creating them with your answers in mind. If a question in your survey is asking if someone supports your candidate, your tag could be something like 'Yes' or 'Support'.

Tags can be created from the '+' (Shortcuts) button by selecting 'Tag.' You must create a tag category before you can create tags. Another sidebar panel will appear on the right to allow you to input a Tag Name, relevant Category, and optional description.

Tag Admin

Tags and Tag Categories live in Tag Admin which is accessible from Admin > Tag Admin.

From the bottom right corner where it says 'Create New', you can create tags and categories in the same manner as described above. You can also create tag groups, which can be useful to stay organized if you are running multiple surveys, races, or initiatives.

Tags and Categories can be edited on this page by double-clicking the row:

Make a tag active or inactive by selecting the check box and referring to the bottom right where it says 'Make'.

Helpful Way to Think of Tags

If the concept of how tags and tag categories are structured is still not making sense, try thinking of them as the make and model of a vehicle. Ford makes the Escape, Explorer, Mustang, and F150. All are very different car models but all are made by Ford. A tag category and a tag work in the same way. Using the Ford example, the tag category is "Ford" and the tags are "Escape", "Explorer", "Mustang", etc.

If your tag category is “Candidate Support” (the make of a car) and your tags are “Support”, “Oppose”, “Undecided” (the model of the car) they are very different tags, but they all correlate back to “Candidate Support”. This keeps all the data organized and usable.
