Understanding Secretary of State (SOS) Accounts

Written by Liz Myers

When InstantNonprofit files your nonprofit formation documents with the state, we typically submit those filings through our corporate filing account with the state’s Secretary of State (SOS) office.

Because of this, customers sometimes ask us for login access to their “SOS account.” However, this is a common misunderstanding.

InstantNonprofit does not create or manage individual SOS accounts for customers.

When we file your Articles of Incorporation, the filing is simply submitted through our corporate filing system with the state. This does not automatically create a personal SOS login account for your organization.

Why You May Not Have an SOS Login

Many states allow filings to be submitted without creating a dedicated account for the organization. When InstantNonprofit submits filings on your behalf:

  • The filing is submitted through our corporate filing account

  • The state records your nonprofit in their public database

  • Your organization exists in the state's registry, but it does not necessarily have its own login account

This is completely normal.

If You Want Your Own SOS Account

If you would like to manage future filings directly with the state (such as annual reports or updates), you can typically create your own SOS account directly with the state’s website.

Once your account is created, you may be able to:

  • Link your nonprofit to your account

  • File annual reports

  • Submit amendments

  • Update addresses or officers

  • Manage future state filings yourself

Each state has its own system, so the exact steps may vary.

Need Help Accessing or Managing an SOS Account?

If you want to create or access an SOS login account, the Secretary of State’s office is the best place to assist you, since they manage the login systems and account permissions.

We recommend contacting your state’s Secretary of State support team directly for help with:

  • Creating a login

  • Linking your organization to an account

  • Recovering login credentials

  • Account permissions

When InstantNonprofit Handles Compliance

If you are enrolled in AutoPilot compliance services, our team will typically handle required state filings for you as part of that service, so you may not need to access the SOS system directly.

You can learn more about AutoPilot here:

Key Takeaway

InstantNonprofit submits your nonprofit filings to the state, but we do not create or manage personal SOS login accounts for organizations.

If you would like direct account access, you can easily create an account with your state’s Secretary of State website.
