Introduction to locked assessments and opening conditions
Assessments can be set up with opening conditions that control when learners can access them. These conditions are configured by authors, so an assessment may be open or locked depending on how it has been set up for the course.
Facilitators can use the Class console to see whether assessments are open or locked for each learner, and to take action where needed. This helps you monitor learner progress, quickly identify access issues, and support learners during a course.

Check whether an assessment is open or locked
You can see whether an assessment is open or locked for an individual learner, or for all learners, in the Class console.
You can check the locked status for each assessment individually by opening the Marking tab, expanding an assessment using the chevron, and viewing the Status column for all learners.
You can view the status across all assessments for an individual learner by opening the Learners tab and selecting Assessed tasks submitted next to the learner.
Note: If they have submissions waiting to be marked, Assessed tasks submitted will instead show as Task to mark.
This takes you to a screen where you can see the Status column for each assessment.
Understand the Status column
The Status column shows both access and progress, so you can quickly see what’s happening for each learner.
No status: The assessment is open, but the learner hasn’t submitted yet
Awaiting marking / Marked: The learner has submitted their assessment
Locked: The learner can’t access the assessment
Overdue: The assessment is open but past its due date
Locked and overdue: The learner can’t access the assessment and the due date has passed
This helps you distinguish between learners who have completed an assessment, those who can’t access it, and those who haven’t submitted yet.
What happens when opening conditions change
Opening conditions can be added or changed by authors, even after a course has started. This can affect whether an assessment is locked or available for a learner.
If conditions are updated, a learner may already meet the new requirements based on their previous submissions. In this case, the assessment may still appear locked in the Class console.
When the learner next views their tasks or opens the course content, the system checks their access again. If they meet the updated conditions, the assessment unlocks automatically.
This means you may not need to manually unlock an assessment if the learner already meets the requirements.
Learn: Find out more about how updates to opening conditions work in our Overview.
When you might need to unlock an assessment
You can unlock an assessment when it is locked due to a score condition and a learner is unable to access it.
Tip: In many cases, assessments will unlock automatically when a learner meets the required conditions or after conditions are updated. Before unlocking, it’s worth confirming whether the learner has recently viewed their tasks or course content, as their access may update without intervention.
You may need to unlock an assessment when:
A learner has not quite met the required score but you want them to continue
Conditions were added or changed after the course started and the learner still cannot access the assessment
There is an issue with the setup or unexpected behaviour
A learner has run out of time or is unable to meet the condition as intended
Unlocking applies to that individual learner only and does not affect other learners in the course.
Unlock an assessment for a learner
If an assessment is locked by a score condition, you can manually open it for an individual learner using Unlock in the Submitted on column.
Unlocking applies to that individual learner only and does not affect other learners in the course.
Note: You cannot reverse an unlock. Once an assessment has been opened for a learner, it will remain open.
You’ll then be shown which condition is being overridden and asked to confirm the action with Unlock.
Once confirmed, the assessment becomes available to that learner and they will receive an in-app notification alerting them they can now access their assessment.
Notes
You can only unlock assessments that are locked by a score condition. If an assessment is locked by a date (open day), only an author can change this.
Once unlocked, the assessment remains open for that learner unless an author republishes the course with new assessment opening conditions (for example, by adding an open day that the learner has not yet reached).
If the assessment status changes while you are viewing the Class console (for example, when a learner meets a condition), the display may not update immediately. Refresh the page to see the latest status.
Viewing the Class console does not affect learner progress or assessment access.
