You have the ability to change your KiwiSaver investment strategy at any time through the Kernel platform - whether that is simply opting for one of our three diversified funds as your sole KiwiSaver investment strategy or changing the asset allocation within a custom Kernel KiwiSaver Plan.
Changing your KiwiSaver investment strategy
Follow these steps to change your KiwiSaver investment strategy:
Step 1: Log into your Kernel account.
Step 2: Navigate to the 'KiwiSaver' tab in the main menu bar.
Step 3: Select 'Edit plan' within the 'Payments and transfers' dropdown menu.
Step 4: Click 'My entire portfolio' and follow the prompts to change your KiwiSaver investment strategy as desired.
Step 5: When choosing the option to 'Construct a custom plan', you are able to update specific percentage allocations to each fund in your KiwiSaver investment strategy. Naturally, the total allocation will need to equal 100%.
Due to the rules of KiwiSaver, your entire KiwiSaver balance must be fully invested at all times. Therefore, you cannot select specific dollar amounts to invest in funds, only percentage amounts of your total KiwiSaver balance.
This is because, hypothetically, if a member were to select dollar amounts instead of percentage allocations, they could be left with excess unallocated cash sitting in their KiwiSaver balance, if they got the allocation amounts wrong.
What happens after the change is confirmed?
Once you have submitted the changes, it will take up to 5-7 business days for the appropriate amount to be sold from your existing funds, and subsequently invested in the new proportions.
Any contributions received in the interim will be invested according to your new KiwiSaver investment strategy.
Important note: You will not be able to change or edit your Kernel KiwiSaver Plan once the process has started.
