Academic integrity signals in exam-style question assignments

See when students paste text or leave the page while answering, and decide what it means.

Written by Honey Jane Santos

When your students answer exam-style questions in an assignment, you can see how many times each student pasted text into their answer and how many times they left the page. Unusual numbers are highlighted, so you can quickly see where you might want to take a closer look or talk with a student.

These are signals, not verdicts. Kognity doesn't decide whether a student has done anything wrong. You do.

Note: This article covers IB DP exam-style questions. For IGCSE, these are called Test practice questions.

How to see the signals

  1. From your class dashboard, open the Assignments tab and select the exam-style question assignment under Active or Past assignments.

  2. Open the question you want to look at.

  3. Go to Student submissions. For each student, you'll see Words submitted, Pastes and Left page.

Under Student response, you'll see Words submitted, Pastes and Left page.
  4. Numbers that are unusually high are highlighted.

Good to know

  • Signals are available in exam-style question assignments in all IB DP and IGCSE subjects.

  • Signals are a starting point, not proof. A student might paste their own notes or leave the page briefly for a good reason.

  • Kognity doesn't block copying and pasting or lock the browser.

  • Students can't see the signals. They aren't told that you can see this activity.

Tips

  • If something stands out, look at the answer itself and talk with the student before drawing conclusions.

  • Tell students at the start of a timed task or mock what's expected, such as whether they can use notes.

FAQ

Does Kognity detect cheating or AI use?

No. Kognity shows you when text was pasted or the page was left. It doesn't judge why, and it doesn't detect AI-generated text.

Can I stop students from copying and pasting or leaving the page?

No. Kognity runs in a web browser, which can't be fully locked down. The signals help you see what happened instead.

Why is a number highlighted?

A highlight means it may be worth a closer look, not that something is wrong.

Can I turn the signals off?

No

Do students know about this?

No, not unless you inform them.
