Instant feedback when students practise exam-style questions

What your students see when they practise on their own, and how to turn it off.

Written by Honey Jane Santos

When students practise exam-style questions on their own, they now get instant feedback as soon as they submit: what works, the main thing to improve and where to look next, with a suggested mark for each part based on the markscheme. Students get feedback on much more of their exam practice, without adding to your marking.

Note: This is currently available in IB DP Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It's the second step in building out independent exam practice. Next, students will be able to work through their feedback step by step, answering questions that guide them towards a stronger answer.

How it works

  1. You choose which exam-style questions your class can practise, using Hide/Show in the exam-style question library.

  2. A student answers a visible question and submits it.

  3. Kognity gives the student feedback and a suggested mark for each part straight away. It uses the same AI-supported scoring as AI suggested scoring for teachers, written for students.

  4. You can see your students' self-practice submissions as before.

How to turn it off

There's no separate on/off switch. To stop students getting instant feedback, hide exam-style questions for self-practice:

  1. Open the exam-style question library for the class.

  2. Select the questions and set them to hidden (grey eye).

This is set per class. It only affects self-practice, not assignments. Questions you've assigned become visible for self-practice once the assignment ends, so hide them again if needed. See Hide mark schemes in exam-style questions.

Good to know

  • The feedback is AI-generated and for practice only. Students see an AI label and a note that it can make mistakes. Marks are always your decision.

  • It doesn't apply to assignments, and it's switched off while a question is part of an active assignment.

  • You can see students' self-practice submissions, but not the suggested marks yet. That's planned.

  • Suggested marks don't feed into Insights.

  • No student names or personal details are sent to the AI, only the answer.

FAQ

Is the AI grading my students?

No. It gives students feedback and a suggested mark to help them practise. Marks are always your decision.

How accurate is it?

It uses the same scoring approach as AI suggested scoring for teachers, based on the markscheme. It can make mistakes, and we're working to improve it with every release.

A student says their feedback is wrong. What should they do?

Talk it through with them, using the markscheme.

Why these subjects?

We're starting where AI-supported scoring has worked best for teachers, and will add more subjects over time.
