This article covers installation of readers on Alliance washers (Speed-Queen, Huebsch) with mechanical controls that are accompanied by a Power Board. These typically have model numbers SCxxMD2 or HCxxMD2, where xx is the machine's capacity.

Parts Required

  • Card Reader Kit

    • The reader board MUST be "Voltage Relay" - Part #: ASSY-02-02-08

  • Cable harness (one of the following parts)

    • Part #: 02-06-35 only for Card-Only Installs

    • Part #: 02-06-79 only for Hybrid (coin + card) Installs

  • High Voltage Sensor box (to determine the whether door is open or closed)

    • Part # HV-SENSOR-01 for both Card-Only and Hybrid Installs

  • High Voltage Relay (to start the Mechanical timer)

    • Part # 03-01-75 only for Hybrid (coin + card) Installs

  • 12V Power supply adapter

    • Part # 03-01-46 only for Hybrid (coin + card) Installs

Installation Steps

Step 0: Number the machines in the location

Before proceeding, it is recommended that you assign numbers and labels to each machines in the laundry room/building.

Step 1: Turn Machine Power OFF

It is always recommended to power the machine off before install the card readers.

Step 2: Number the reader using the DIP switches

Review our: Reader DIP Switch settings article for details on how to set the Card Reader's Machine Type, and Reader Number.

You need to do this BEFORE mounting the Card Readers onto the machines, as accessing the back of the card reader is required.

Step 3: Remove coin drop (Card-Only)

For Card-Only installs, the Card reader will be mounted in the area where the coin drop has been removed.

Step 4: Power Board Wire Connections

Card-Only Install

Locate the machine's Power Board and the existing 3-pin connector (with all red wires) connecting to it.

Note the position of PIN 1 - it is the one with a small arrow marker on the connector:

Disconnect this 3-pin connector

Hybrid (Coin + Card) Install

Connect the provided 12V power supply to an available outlet. Otherwise, splice the power supply to 110V/220Vac and connect the 12Vdc plug to the mating plug on the harness.

When connecting to the machine directly, you'll be cutting off the AC prong, and splicing these wires directly to the machine (we recommend consulting the manufacturer, or an electrician, to confirm this type of connection).

Step 5: Card Reader Harness Connections

Card-Only Install

Connect the 3-pin connector from the supplied Card Reader wiring harness to the header from step 5. The WHITE wire on the Card Reader's harness goes to PIN 1 on the Power Board:

Hybrid (Coin + Card) Install

Splice the two red wires from the high voltage relay into the machine's start switch:

Step 6: High Voltage Sensor Connections

The High Voltage sensor is used in order for the Card Reader to be able to detect if the machine is running or not.

Splice the two RED wires, from the High Voltage sensor, to wires coming from Pin2 and Pin3 from connector J1 on the Power Board (Pin2 and Pin3 are interchangeable since they carry AC voltage).

Connect the other end of the High Voltage sensor to the mating connector on the cable harness:

Step 7: Mount and Activate the Card Reader

Proceed to secure the reader to the machine (no drilling is required when mounting these readers), and then Activate the card reader using the Activation Card for this specific location:

Note: you MUST use the Activation Card for THIS SPECIFIC LOCATION,
or else the card reader will not appear on the LaundroPortal for this location.

This will activate the reader and programs the reader with the location's specific Support and Location IDs.

The Card Reader will then automatically connect to VAC01's wireless network and once connected, will be visible on the LaundroPortal where you can configure it's vend prices.

Setting Vend Prices

Pricing is set via the LaundroPortal.

The Card Reader sends one pulse to the machine to trigger payment, so you'll need to configure the machine to start from just one pulse (1 "coin").

For additional information about machine vend pricing, review our Configuring Card Reader/Machine Vend Prices article.

Troubleshooting

Below are common problems that are sometimes encountered during installation on these types of machines.

For more general Card Reader troubleshooting, see the Reader Troubleshooting section of the help center.

Issue

Explanation and resolution

Reader display showing "BUSY" but machine not running

The problem is likely in one these three issues:

  1. the High Voltage Sensor is not properly connected

  2. there's a problem with the High Voltage Sensor.

  3. there's a problem with the washing machine

  4. there's a problem with the card reader

If this is a new installation....
Chances are it is issue #1, so double check the splicing to the two grey wires. You should also do a Reader Swap with a reader/machine that IS presently working.

If this reader/machine was working before...then it is likely issue #2 or #3.

Contact the Laundroworks support team for assistance, as we can configure the Card Reader to bypass the High Voltage Sensor to see if reader can start the machine.

Reader advances the mechanical timer too far when starting the machine; machine does not start

This might be related to the high voltage sensor. Contact our support team, as we configure the card reader to bypass the HV sensor.
