Installation Summary

Installation Steps

Step 0: Number the machines in the location

Before proceeding, it is recommended that you assign numbers and labels to each machines in the laundry room/building.

Step 1: Turn Machine Power OFF

It is always recommended to power the machine off before install the card readers.

Step 2: Number the reader using the DIP switches

In order to configure a Card Reader to report as a specific Washer or Dryer number, you need to set the reader's DIP Switches to specific positions. These DIP Switches ONLY affect what the reader will display as for it's machine type (Washer/Dryer) and it's machine number:

Review our: Reader DIP Switch settings article for details on how to set the Card Reader's Machine Type, and Reader Number.

You need to do this BEFORE mounting the Card Readers onto the machines, as accessing the back of the card reader is required.

Step 3: Remove Coin Drop (Card Only Installations)

If you're doing a Hybrid Coin+Card installation, this step should be skipped.

The Card Reader will be mounted in the area where the coin drop has been removed for Card Only installations.

Step 4: Card Reader Pulse/Signal Connection

The Pulse wire connection will differ depending on whether you're doing a Card Only, or a Hybrid Coin+Card installation; and it will differ depending on if your machine has the ability to be configured for Card Mode.

If you are unsure if your machine has the ability to be configured for Card Mode, follow the Hybrid Installation Pulse wire connection instructions, as this installation method will work for both Card Only and Hybrid Coin+Card installations:

Option 1: Card Only Installations - Card Mode enabled/Square Molex Connector (click to expand):

Locate the square Molex connector and connect it to the mating connector on the provided cable harness:

IMPORTANT (2-pin connector):

Locate the big white connector (J22) on the machine's computer board.

Note that first two wires (1 and 2) go to a 2-pin Molex connector.

This 2-pin connector MUST be plugged into the mating 2-pin connector coming off of the square Molex connector from the previous step. If the mating 2-pin connect is currently occupied, you will need to disconnect it from whatever connection it's making, and connect it to this 2-pin connector.

This is often the case when converting from other card systems.

In other words, the start relay on the reader-side ultimately needs to connect to J22-2-1 and J22-2-2:

If this square connector is not present in the machine, then use the Alternation Installation method discussed below

Option 2: Hybrid Coin+Card or Card Only Installations - Coin1/Coin2 Interface/Spliced Connections (click to expand):

This method uses a connection to the Coin1 or Coin2 interface of the Washer.

This is required if configuring the machine for Hybrid Coin+Card Payments, or if the machine does not have Card mode settings that can be enabled via the machine's programming menus.

This option can be used for Card Only installations as well, as the Card Reader will be emulating the Coin Drops pulse signal in order to send it's pulse to trigger payment.

Splice the GREEN and WHITE wires from the Card Reader wiring harness across Coin1 and +5V on the machine controls (you can also use the Coin2 and +5V machine wires if you prefer to use the Coin2 input):

When using the above pulse wire connections, the Card Reader's Control Type needs to be set to a normally closed pulse type (typically "[04]").

The Yellow and Black Card Reader wiring harness wires are NOT used at all (if they are present) in this configuration.

Step 5: Card Reader Power Connection

Splice the AC-side of the 12V power adapter to the power terminal block (110V or 220Vac).

Connect DC jack from the 12V supply to main reader harness

Step 6: Activate the Card Reader

Proceed to secure the reader to the machine and then Activate the card reader using the Activation Card for this specific location:

Note: you MUST use the Activation Card for THIS SPECIFIC LOCATION,
or else the card reader will not appear on the LaundroPortal for this location.

This will activate the reader and programs the reader with the location's specific Support and Location IDs.

The Card Reader will then automatically connect to VAC01's wireless network and once connected, will be visible on the LaundroPortal where you can configure it's vend prices

Step 7: Configure Machine Side Settings for Card Mode

If you used Option 2 (spliced pulse wire connections), this step should be skipped as you do NOT set the machine to Card Mode since you are using the Coin1 or Coin2 inputs.

This step is only required if you used Option 1 for the Pulse Wire connection.

Go into the machine's configuration menu and set the machine to:

  • 1 Pr

  • CArd mode:

Note: if your machine does NOT have both the 1PR and CArd settings, you'll need to be using Option 2's pulse wire connections.

When using Option 2's Coin1/Coin2 input pulse connection method, you do NOT adjust the machine side settings to enable Card Mode (the machine should be left with it's default settings which allow it to work with a Coin Drop).

Setting Vend Prices

Pricing is set via the LaundroPortal.

The Card Reader sends one pulse to the machine's control board to trigger it to start, so you'll need to configure the washer to start from just one pulse (1 "coin").

For additional information about machine vend pricing, review our Configuring Card Reader/Machine Vend Prices article.

Troubleshooting

Below are problems commonly encountered during installation of readers on this B-micro machines. For more general reader troubleshooting, see the troubleshooting section of our Help center.

Issue

Explanation and resolution

Reader takes the money, but machine won't start, and the machine does not register a pulse at all

Ensure that the 2-pin connector, as per the Option 1: pulse/start wire connection, is connected.

And especially if you're converting from coin operation, ensure you've set the 1 Pr and CArd settings in the machine's configuration.

If you do not have the 1PR and CArd settings on your machines; or if enabling these settings do not allow the machine to get a pulse from the Card Reader, then you'll likely need to connect the reader to the machine using Option 2: Spliced wire connection.

Reader takes money, the machine doesn't start, but the price on the machine goes down by $0.25

The Card Reader will only sends ONE pulse to the machine, so ensure that the machine is configured to start off of one pulse.

If the machine is only deducting 25cents when a Laundry Card is used, then the Card Reader is installed correctly, but the machine side settings need to be configured so it starts from 1 pulse (the machine is currently registering the pulse, but only as a 25cents payment instead of the entire vend price).

Therefore, inside the MACHINE's configuration settings, you can either:

  1. Change the value of one pulse to be equal to the full vend price of the machine, or

  2. Change the machine's vend price to $0.25 or $0.01.

In either case, the one pulse from the reader would satisfy the machine's vend price and trigger the machine to start it's cycle.

The machine starts, but once the cycle is over the Card Reader continues to display "Busy"

The Card Reader's Cycle Time (mins) setting is out of sync with the machine actual cycle time of the machine:

Pulse communication Card Readers are NOT communicating with the machine directly, so the only way the Card Reader knows how long a wash cycle lasts for is based on the amount of time programmed into the Card Reader's Cycle Time (mins) setting.

Regardless of what's actually happening with the machine, once the reader takes a payment, it starts a timer based on this setting, and the reader will display "Busy" until it's internal time has expired.

The machine is in complete control of the cycle time, so adjust the machine settings to set the actual cycle time, then ensure you configure the reader with the same cycle time.

If you have different cycles that last for different amounts of time, the reader should be programmed with the shortest cycle's time.

The Card Reader displays "BUSY" as soon as it boots up, regardless if machine is running or not

If using the Option 1: pulse/start wire connection, Ensure that the 2-pin connector is connected, and you've set the 1 Pr and CArd settings in the machine's configuration.

If you do not have the 1PR and CArd settings on your machines; or if the Card Reader is still stuck saying "Busy" after enabling these settings, then you'll likely need to connect the reader to the machine using Option 2: Spliced wire connection.
