Working on personal goals is an important part of the Learned platform. An important application to goals is the ability to plan new goals for the coming period and to evaluate them accordingly. Since many organisations work with goals per year or per quarter, it is possible to link goals in Learned to a goal cycle.

Where can I find the goal cycles?

The Admins of the organisation are responsible for creating and maintaining the goal cycles/timeframes. A goal cycle/timeframe is a term to which it is possible to link goals. In other words: within that specific time frame, employee is working on this goal. To create Goal cycles, go to the Development page - Goals. Click on Settings to view and create the goal cycles.

Creating and editing Goal Cycles

Learned has put some standard goal cycles in the system so that you can get started right away. If your organisation works with goals in a period other than, for example, a year or quarter, it is possible to edit the standard goal cycles with the 3 dots on the right of the cycle.

In addition, it is possible to set up your own goal cycles. Give the goal cycle a clear name that indicates what kind of term it is and then set the term.

If you want to send additional notifications to remind the employee to update progress on goals, you can also set that up here.

Applications and best practices for goal cycles

Then you can get started with the goal cycles. Below is an overview of the different applications:

  • When creating personal goals, the goal can be linked to a goal cycle.

  • Planning review: When creating a review template, there is the option to 'plan' both types of goals. For example, you can ask the employee to prepare new goals for that year in preparation for the 2022 planning review. The selected goals cycle when creating the review determines the period in which the new goals should be planned.

    • For example: You want the employee to work on 2 new learning goals and 2 new business goals in 2022. You add both options to the review template and set the goal cycle '2022' when creating the review. When the employee fills out the review form, they can immediately set new goals, or add existing goals that were not yet linked to a goal cycle to the new goal cycle '2022'.

  • Review conversation: You can also set in the review template that you want to evaluate goals. You set a rating scale according to your own wishes and choose a goal cycle when creating the review.

    • For example: suppose an employee has 10 business goals in Learned. Of these, 2 are linked to the goal cycle '2021-Q4'. At the end of Q4, you want to evaluate whether the employee has achieved the goals. You create a review template with the option 'Evaluate business goals' and when you create the review round you set goals cycle '2021-Q4'. The employee then only sees the 2 goals from Q4 in the review form.

Note: If a goal cycle appears in a review to schedule goals, it is not possible to delete the goal cycle. At that moment, it is possible that employees are planning goals within that cycle. You can delete other goal cycles, even if goals are already linked to them. These goals are then disconnected.
