Creating a new goal for an employee

Working on goals is an important part of the Learned platform, for example to improve on certain skills, or to achieve a certain target. We distinguish between the following types of goals:

  1. Personal goals: Personal goals of the employee that are focused on achieving targets, KPIs, or completing projects. You can also use this type of goal to create goals that are related to skill development.

  2. Team goals: Goals for an entire team. How does the team contribute to the goals of the organisation? You can also use this type of goal for project teams.

  3. Organisational goals: Company goals. Where are we going as an organisation?

In this article, we will discuss how you as a Coach and/or Admin can easily create a personal goal and assign it to another employee within the organisation. You do this by going to your Goals page and clicking the 'Create Goal' button in the upper right corner.

In step 1 you will define the goal for the employee. After you have defined the goal, you have the option to remove yourself as owner of the goal using the trash can-button. You can then select one of your team members as the new owner of this goal using the 'Add owner' button.

Another option to create a goal for an employee is through your Team dashboard - Profile of your team member. Then go to the Goals tab and click Create Goal. This way, the employee is already immediately set as the owner of the goal.

❗️Note: As Admin you do this via the Members page.

Creating a goal - Step 1: Goal details

When creating the goal, in step 1 you are going to determine what the goal is going to be. Try to write down as specifically as possible what the goal is your team member will be working on. You can further substantiate this in the description field under Advanced Settings. In addition, in this step you also determine who can view the goal of the employee. There are 3 options regarding the privacy of a goal:

  1. Private: Only employee and coaches of this employee can see this goal.

  2. Team: The goal is visible to all direct colleagues in the teams of which the employee is also a member.

  3. Public: The goal is visible to all colleagues of that employee within the organisation.

Finally, in step 1 you can also set a deadline for this goal. This deadline is optional. In fact, the employee may be working on a goal continuously.

Goal suggestions

If you would like some suggestions for a goal your employee can work on, you have the option via the Suggestions button to view a number of goal suggestions linked to the role profile skills of this employee. So if there is a skill that needs to be improved, these suggestions can help you.

❗️Note: You will only see goal suggestions if there are skills linked to the role profile of the employee in Learned.

❗️Note: The goal suggestions are generated using AI. Please read the suggestions carefully and determine if this is going to be the right goal for your employee.

When you choose a goal that is given as a suggestion, you also see that the goal you are setting up is linked to the corresponding skill.

Advanced settings

Under advanced settings, you can set and add several more options:

  • Description: Add a further explanation of the goal here. Why does this employee need to work on this goal? And what result do you expect the employee to achieve with this goal?

  • Time frame: Select the period in which the employee will work on this goal. Note: If you plan goals for an employee from a conversation form, the time frame is already defined for you. However, you can always set a deadline according to your own wishes. So by what date do you want the employee to have achieved the goal?

  • Subtype: Indicate here whether the goal is a business goal or a learning goal.

  • Contributes to goal: Link the goal to another personal, team or organisation goal here if this goal contributes to the progress of the other goal. When you link a goal to another goal, the goal's progress only impacts the linked goal if that goal's measurement method is set to 'Average of goals that contribute'.

  • Editors: By default employee and coach have the right to edit the goal. You can turn this on or off with the slider buttons.

Creating a goal - Step 2: Goal progress

In this step you decide how the employee will set progress to the goal. Here is an overview of the options.

Average of activities

When you choose 'Average of activities', you can create 1 or more activities. This will cut the goal into smaller pieces to keep it manageable for your employee. Add custom activities yourself, or choose one of the activities from the library. By completing activities your employee will eventually complete the goal.

❗️Note: Choosing activities from the library is only possible if your organization also has the Onboard & Learn module enabled in Learned.

Custom activities

When creating a Custom activity, you have the option to specify the measurement method of this activity under Advanced Settings.

Average of contributing goals

If you choose the 'Average of contributing goals' option, the goal's progress will be fully influenced by the underlying goals linked to this goal. The goal's progress is then updated by updating underlying linked goals.

Done or not done

With this option, the goal is immediately completed when it is achieved. You have the option of adding different activities when you choose 'Done or not done' to break the goal into smaller pieces for the employee. Employee then has to manually update both the progress of the activities and the progress of the goal.

Metrics

If you choose to track the goal with Metrics, you have a choice of:

  • Currency

  • Number

  • Percentage

For Metrics set a start value and a desired end value. Again, you have the option of adding activities to your goal. Do this to make the goal concrete with logical steps to perform and/or achieve in a certain order. Again, employee should update the progress of the activities and the progress of the goal separately.

The Goals overview page

When you go to the Goals page via Development, you will be taken to an overview page where you can see at a glance all your goals that you are working on under the 'My goals' tab. The 'All goals' tab shows you all goals within the organisation that you are allowed to see with your permissions. Here, for example, you will find all goals of your team members.

Using the filters on the overview page, you can filter by goal type (personal/team/organisation), time frame, team and/or status of goals.

Checking the progress

On the 'All goals'-tab you can see the progress of the goals of your team members. When you click on one of the goals, you can see this more in depth.

Each goal has a status label. In Learned you will find 4 different status labels:

  • To do: No progress has been measured on this goal yet.

  • In progress: Employee has made progress on the goal and updated it in Learned.

  • Completed: Employee has completed the goal.

  • Problem: Employee is experiencing an issue and cannot proceed with the goal.

When you see the label 'Problem' you immediately know that your team member is experiencing some issue and needs help to continue with this goal. You can add this goal as a topic in one of your 1-1 conversations.

Settings, updates & feedback

Scrolling down in the goal gives you more information about the settings of this goal, the updates the employee has made to this goal. When your organisation works with Real time feedback you will find your feedback provided to the employee regarding to this goal under 'Feedback'. On this tab you can also directly provide the employee with feedback for this goal.
