This article explains the features of the new LegalOn. For information on the current version’s product features, please refer to this page.
This article explains how to create a new matter directly within LegalOn and use it to manage tasks, communications, and related files. This is useful when you receive tasks verbally, via chat, or from a manager and want to track them properly in LegalOn.
File Requirements:
File formats: See Supported file types for uploading to LegalOn
Each file size: up to 100 MB
Total upload limit: up to 200 MB
Max number of files: 10 per matter
File name: up to 200 characters (including extension)
1. Create a matter manually in LegalOn
Go to [Matters] List.
Click [+ Create matter] at the top right.
Complete the form and click [Create].

Tip: The user who creates the matter is recorded as the Requester.
To receive email notifications when a matter is created, see How to set up Email notifications for yourself (Matter Management).
2. Assign assignees
After creating a matter, assign a primary or additional assignee as needed.
See How to assign an Assignee (and an optional secondary assignee).
3. [For assignees] Review and edit the matter
From the Matter List, open the [Assigned] tab.
Click the matter you want to view.
Review or edit information under [Request info] and [Matter info].
4. [For assignees] Start communication
If communicating by email:
From the Matter details page, click to send your first email to the requester or stakeholders.
See Communicating about Matters with stakeholders via Timeline and Email tabs.
Important:
If the requester includes the Matter intake email address in CC/TO when sending the first message, a new matter may be created unintentionally.
Always start email threads from LegalOn to ensure they are linked to the correct matter.
Stakeholders reply to the same thread to continue communication.
If communicating outside email:
Communicate with other Matter Management users:
Use the timeline feature to @mention users and post messages.
See Communicating about Matters with stakeholders via Timeline and Email tabs.
Communicate via Slack:
Matter-related conversations in Slack can be saved to LegalOn.
See Manage matters via Slack.
