Can I use AI in my coaching?

Clients come to Leland for your expertise, judgment, and attention, and AI should strengthen those things, not replace them.

Here's how to use it well, within our Leland policies:

Use AI to Add Value, Not Replace You

Use AI to:

  • Prepare more thoroughly

  • Research faster

  • Draft frameworks

  • Give more detailed feedback

The insight, judgment, and personal guidance should still come from you. A good test: would the client get the same value by pasting their question into ChatGPT themselves? If so, you haven't added enough.

Bill for Your Time, Not AI's

If a client pays for an hour, they should get an hour of your focused time. If AI makes that hour more productive, great. Spending 10 minutes with AI and billing for 60 isn't acceptable.

The same goes for async work like essay reviews and resume edits. The time you bill should reflect real time you spent.

Own Everything You Deliver

Review, edit, and stand behind anything AI helps you produce. Check facts, school requirements, and recommendations before you share them. "The AI said so" is never an excuse for inaccurate or generic advice.

Protect Client Confidentiality

Client materials (resumes, essays, personal stories, company information) are confidential under our Terms of Service. When you use AI:

  • Only use tools that don't train on your data, such as paid tools with training turned off

  • Remove identifying details when you can

  • Don't use AI notetakers or recorders in sessions without the client's explicit permission

Keep the Client's Work Authentically Theirs

For admissions and applications especially, AI can help you give feedback and brainstorm. It should never be used to write essays or application materials for the client. That was never a coach's role, with or without AI.

Be Open About It When It Matters

You don't need to disclose every time you use AI for prep. If AI meaningfully shaped a deliverable, or a client asks, tell them honestly.

How We Handle Concerns

We operate in good faith and don't actively monitor how coaches use AI. If a client raises a concern, we'll review it just as we would any other quality issue, following our normal feedback, refund, and coach standards processes.

If we have concerns about how you're using AI in your coaching practice, we'll reach out to you directly. Coaches who receive a warning about their AI use and continue to raise concerns may face additional action, including a temporary profile pause or removal from the platform.
