Can I add my client or partner as a member instead of an admin to keep things secure?

Bring a client or partner onto a deal without giving them full owner control.

Yes. There are two separate sets of roles on the platform, and it helps to know which one you are setting.

Admin and member describe access to your own account, for the people on your team. Business Owner, Collaborator and Partner describe access to a client's business or a single deal, for the people you invite in from outside. They are different axes, not two names for the same thing.

When you invite someone from a business profile through Manage access, you choose their role, so you can bring a client or partner in at a lighter level rather than full owner access. Business Owner carries top-level permissions. Collaborator and Partner let people take part in a deal without controlling the whole business profile.

Click through the walkthrough above to see the invite and the role selector.

One thing worth knowing when you are thinking about scope: admins of a management group have access to every business in their portal.
