How to disable System Integrity Protection (SIP) on your Mac

In order to use Lockwell on your Mac you may need to temporarily disable Mac SIP. You can re-enable it afterwards. How to enable SIP.

How to Disable SIP

  1. Restart your computer in Recovery mode.

    1. There are different steps to restart your computer in recovery mode, depending on whether it has an Intel or Apple silicon processor. See the steps below to determine which you have.

  2. Launch Terminal from the Utilities menu.

    1. Type csrutil disable in the terminal and click return on your keyboard to run the command.

    2. Confirm disabling SIP by typing y and clicking return again if asked.

    3. Enter your device password in the terminal and click return again if prompted.

  3. Restart your computer.

Determine if You're on an Intel or Apple Silicon Mac

Follow these steps to determine whether you're on an Intel or Apple Silicon Mac.

  1. Choose Apple menu > About This Mac

    1. On Mac computers with Apple silicon, you'll see an item labeled Chip, followed by the name of the chip.

    2. On Mac computers with an Intel processor, you'll see an item labeled Processor, followed by the name of an Intel processor.

How to Start Recovery Mode for Intel-based Macs

  1. Restart your Mac.

  2. Immediately press and hold Command-R until you see the startup screen.

  3. If you see a lock, enter the password for your Mac.

  4. If asked, select a volume to recover, then click Next.

  5. Select an administrator account, then click Next.

  6. Enter the password for the administrator account, then click Continue.

  7. Return to the "How to disable SIP" steps above to complete disabling SIP.


How to Start Recovery Mode for Apple Silicon Macs

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > Shut Down.

    1. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.

  2. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until the system volume and the Options button appear.

  3. Click the Options button, then click Continue.

  4. If asked, select a volume to recover, then click Next.

  5. Select an administrator account, then click Next.

  6. Enter the password for the administrator account, then click Continue.

  7. Return to the "How to disable SIP" steps above to complete disabling SIP.
