What is SIP on your Mac?

System Integrity Protection (SIP) is a security technology that helps protect your Mac from malicious software by limiting the actions that the root user can perform on protected parts of the Mac operating system.

How to Enable SIP on Your Mac

Have an open security issue to enable SIP? After enabling SIP, exit out of the desktop app and re-open it from your dock. Lockwell will close the issue if SIP is enabled.

To enable SIP, do the following:

  1. Restart your computer in Recovery mode

  2. Launch Terminal from the Utilities menu

    1. You may have to click Options first on some Macs

  3. Run the command csrutil enable

    1. Type y and click enter

    2. Enter the password for an account with admin permissions on your device

  4. Restart your computer.

How to start your Mac in Recovery Mode

For Apple silicon users:

Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window. Click the gear icon labeled Options, then click Continue.

For Intel-based Mac users:

If you're not using a Mac with Apple silicon, turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold Command (โŒ˜)-R until you see an Apple logo or other image.

When in macOS Recovery, your Mac shows utilities to restore, reinstall macOS, and more.

If you're having trouble starting your macOS in recovery mode see macOS Recovery.
