Lokalise Vantage: Google Docs integration

Learn how to use the Google Docs integration in Lokalise Vantage to import files and start translating content directly from Drive.

Written by Ilya Krukowski

The Google Docs integration in Lokalise Vantage allows you to import files directly from your Drive when creating a project.

Instead of uploading files manually, you can connect your Google account, browse your Drive, and select the content you want to translate — all without leaving Vantage.

Once connected, you simply choose your files, configure the project (languages, glossary, workflow), and Vantage automatically starts translating your content, just like with standard file uploads.

Create a project with Google Docs integration

You can use the Google Drive integration when creating a new Vantage project instead of uploading files manually.

The setup process is similar to creating a standard project, with one difference — you select files directly from your Drive.

Step 1: Create a new project with Google Docs as your file source

Start by creating a project as usual: open the Vantage dashboard and click Create project.

Then pick Connect to your tool and select Google Docs:

Click Continue and then:

  • Enter the project name

  • Select your base language

  • Add one or more target languages

Once you're ready, click Continue with Google. You will be prompted to:

  • sign in with your Google account

  • grant access to your Drive

Before connecting your Google Drive, make sure you understand how access to files is shared. See the Access and permissions section for details.

You may see a warning that the app is not verified by Google. This is expected while the verification process is still in progress (we're actively working on resolving this). To continue, click Advanced and then Go to app.

Step 2: Choose a drive to use

Once logged in, choose the drive you want to use and click Connect drive:

Step 3: Select files from Google Drive

After connecting, you will be able to select a folder on the drive.

Once selected, you'll be presented with a list of available files. You can filter your files by date range using controls in the top menu.

Browse your content and select one or more files using checkboxes. These files will be used as the source content for your project. Finally, click Continue.

Step 4: Configure and start translation

After selecting files, continue the setup as usual:

  • optionally add glossary terms

  • choose your workflow (AI only or AI + human review)

Once the project is created, Vantage will:

  • import your selected files

  • segment and translate the content

  • start the workflow automatically

You will be redirected to the editor, where you can track progress and review translations just like in any other Vantage project.

Send translated files to Google Drive

Once your translations are ready, you can send them back to Google Drive directly from the editor.

Step 1: Open the send dialog

In the editor, click Send to Google Drive.

If translation is still in progress, you may see a message like: “Some languages are still in progress”. In this case, only completed translations will be sent to Google Drive.

Step 2: Select files

In the dialog:

  • Select the files you want to export

  • Click Next

Step 3: Choose languages

You can control which language versions are sent:

  • Enable All target languages to export all completed translations

  • Or disable it and select specific languages manually

Step 4: Send files

Click Send to start the export.

How files are organised in Google Drive

Once exported, Vantage creates the following structure in your Google Drive:

  • A folder named Lokalise

  • Inside it, a folder named Drive

  • Inside that, one folder per original file

Each file folder contains translated versions of the document, organised by language.

Translated files include the language code in the file name. For example:

  • My Sample File_de

  • My Sample File_fr

Technical limitations and special notes

Supported format

  • Currently, only Google Docs files are supported

  • Other Google Drive file types are not supported at this time

Document structure

  • Tabs within a Google Doc can be imported

  • However, exported files will not preserve tabs, as the Google Drive API does not currently support recreating them

Unsupported content

  • Graphs and diagrams are not supported and may not be imported or preserved correctly

Access and permissions

When you connect a Google Drive, you grant access to that Drive’s files to everyone who has access to the Vantage project.

This means:

  • If you connect a personal Drive, other project contributors may be able to see those files

  • Access is shared at the project level, not per user

Make sure you connect the appropriate Drive (for example, a shared or team Drive) based on your organization’s access requirements.
