We ask you to tell us the purpose of your trip to help us understand why people are riding their bikes. Is it just for fun/fitness? Or are you riding to get somewhere rather than using a car? Love to Ride has a goal of getting more people to try riding bikes for transportation, so accurately recording your trip purpose helps us figure out how we're doing!
When you log a ride, you’ll be asked to select a trip purpose. Simply choose one from the dropdown menu and it will be saved as such!
📱For our Love to Ride app users, the app will remember your last ride purpose and automatically apply this to future rides. This will remain your default ride type until you change your trip purpose again!
What is a ride for transportation?
A ride for transportation is any journey you do on your bicycle for the primary purpose of getting to or from somewhere. This could include riding to the store, to visit a friend, to the library, going to work or to pick up the kids. Any time you use your bike as a way to get somewhere, that's a transportation ride. 😊
To log a ride for transportation, select ‘transport to or from other destination’ (or 'from A to B' on the Love to Ride app) when you log a ride manually.
A ride 'to or from work' or ‘to or from a meeting’ will also count as a ride for transportation, however, there is a separate ride type for commutes to work (more on that below!)
Together, your rides to/from work and your rides to other destinations contribute to your CO2 savings and your number of transport trips. Find out more about how we calculate the CO2 here.
What counts as a commute?
All rides marked as rides ‘to/from work’ count as commutes. Rides to/from other destinations should be logged under the ‘transport to/from other destination’ (or 'From A to B' on the app) trip purpose.
Individual Top Commuter leaderboards count the total number of days on which you have logged a ride ‘to/from work’ during the campaign period.
The same applies to the Group leaderboards for ‘Most Commute Days’. All Group members' rides ‘to/from work’ are totaled.
If your ride is less than 6 miles your ride purpose will default to ‘transport to or from work’ when it it occurs between:
7:30-9:30am, Monday to Friday
4:30-6:30pm, Monday to Friday
Rides less than 3 miles will default to ‘transport to or from other destination’ anytime on the weekend and at these times:
9:30am to 4:30pm, Monday-Friday
6:30pm and 7:30am, Monday-Friday
This is the same if you are syncing your rides from Strava. You can also use the ‘commute’ tag on Strava, which will be picked up as ‘ride to/from work’ on your Love to Ride profile.
Note: If you update your Strava ride with the ‘Commute’ tag after saving it, this will not come across as ‘to/from work’ and will need to be edited manually on Love to Ride.
