To connect to your Windows VPS with Remote Desktop, you need three things: the server's IP address, the user name Administrator and the server password. All three are on the server's page in the client area.

Remote Desktop works only on a Windows VPS. It doesn't work on Ubuntu, Debian or other Linux templates.

To get a Windows VPS, choose a template from the Windows Server tab when you deploy or reinstall the server:

Template selection with the Windows Server tab open and Windows Server 2022 selected.

How to connect from a Windows PC

Just deployed or reinstalled? Windows restarts a few times during setup. Wait a few minutes before you connect.

Step 1: Open Remote Desktop.
Press Win + R, type mstsc and press Enter.

Windows Run dialog with mstsc typed in the Open field.

Step 2: Enter the IP address.
In Computer, type your server's IP address and click Connect.

Step 3: Log in.
Type Administrator as the user name and your server password, then click OK.

Windows Security dialog with arrows to the User name and Password fields.

Step 4: Accept the certificate.
If a certificate warning appears, click Yes. This warning is normal the first time you connect. The Windows desktop then opens.

How to connect from a Mac

Step 1: Install Windows App.
Download Windows App from the Mac App Store. It used to be called Microsoft Remote Desktop.

Step 2: Add your server.
Click + > Add PC and type your server's IP address in PC name.

Step 3: Connect.
Open the connection and log in as Administrator with your server password.

Fixing connection problems

If Remote Desktop can't reach your Windows VPS, check these three things in order.

Step 1: Check that the server is running.
On the server's page, click Start under Service Actions if the server is stopped.

Server Manage page with the Service Actions Start, Reboot, Stop, Shut Down and Change Password.

Step 2: Allow port 3389 in the firewall.
If your server has rules under Service Management > Firewall, add one for Remote Desktop: Protocol 6 Transmission Control Protocol, Destination Port 3389 and Enable switched on.

Create Firewall Rule allowing TCP port 3389 from 198.51.100.7, with Enable switched on.

Step 3: Turn on Remote Desktop inside Windows.
Open noVNC Console under Service Management, log in as Administrator and run these two lines in PowerShell:

Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server' -Name fDenyTSConnections -Value 0
Enable-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup 'Remote Desktop'

If the connection opens but the password is rejected, use Administrator as the user name, not your own PC account. Copy the password with the copy icon next to Server Password instead of typing it. If you changed the password inside Windows, use the one you set.

Keeping your Windows VPS safe

After your first login, change the Administrator password and install the Windows updates. In the firewall rule for port 3389, put your own IP address in Source, so only your computer can connect.
