Send a Payment Plan to a Student

Build and send a student's payment plan from the Send Payment Plan quick action on your home page.

You can build a payment plan for a student and send it to them in one flow, starting from the Send Payment Plan quick action on your Lumion home page. The student gets an email to complete their application and sign their agreement.

Who: School Admins, Finance Managers, and School Representatives · Where: Home › Send Payment Plan (quick action)

Step 1: Enter the student's information

1. From your home page, click the Send Payment Plan quick action.

2. Enter the student's first name, last name, email, phone number, country, and state.

3. The optional fields at the bottom (such as an external or SIS student ID) don't change the student's experience. They're there to help with your reporting and reconciliation, so fill them in if they're useful to your team.

Tip: Make sure the state is filled in. Plans are matched to the student's state, so if it's blank — or your school hasn't been set up for that state yet — your plans may not appear in the next step. Contact your Customer Success Manager to add a state.

Step 2: Choose the plan and set the terms

4. Select the program's plan from the plan dropdown. The plan fills in your default tuition, deposit, and term.

5. Deposit: Adjust the deposit amount if needed (for example, if the student wants to put more down) and set the deposit due date.

6. Require deposit before signing: We recommend leaving this switch off. When it's on, the student can't sign their contract until the deposit is paid. The deposit is still due and collected either way — leaving it off simply gets the contract signed sooner.

7. First installment due date: Choose when the first scheduled payment will be collected.

8. Number of payments: Adjust the term if needed (for example, 48 months instead of 60).

9. Deductions: If the amount to finance should be less than tuition minus the deposit, add a deduction and choose the type — for example, a Scholarship of $3,000. The net amount to finance updates automatically.

10. Payment cap (optional): You can set a reduced payment amount for a set number of early payments. Most schools leave this off.

Step 3: Review the preview and send

11. Review the preview page. It shows the total tuition, deposit, amount to finance, number of payments, payment amount, and start date — for example: $10,000 tuition, $500 deposit, $9,500 financed over 20 payments of $475 starting October 5. This is a great page to walk through with the student while you're meeting.

12. Send the plan. The student receives an email to complete their payment plan.

What the student sees

After they open the email, the student:

  • Signs a privacy disclosure and creates their profile (this is where they'll log in to make payments).

  • Reviews a Truth in Lending disclosure. It shows the interest rate — 0% for interest-free plans — which can reassure students who ask about it.

  • Reviews their plan terms and enters their applicant information, address, and emergency contact. There's no hard credit inquiry.

  • Signs their final agreement with identity verification, a verification code, and a digital signature.

  • Adds a payment method in their portal. Bank account (ACH) has no fee; credit or debit cards carry a 3% processing fee. The first payment method they use is automatically set up for autopay.

After it's sent

Go to Payments › Contracts to see each student's plan, signing status, payment schedule, payment history, and payment methods. Contracts are your source of truth for payment information; Contacts holds the student's general information and forms.
