How the Equation Writer Works

Depending on the student's grade level, Magma Math automatically displays the appropriate input method when opening supported assignments.

Grades 9 and Above

Students in Grades 9 and above use a math keyboard and answer box to enter mathematical expressions and notation.

The math keyboard makes it easy to:

  • write complex equations

  • enter advanced mathematical notation

  • add symbols and expressions

  • organize mathematical thinking clearly

Grades 6–8

Students in Grades 6–8 use the Equation Writer to enter mathematical expressions and notation.

Grades Below 6

Students in lower grades continue using spreadsheet mode to support standard algorithm work and foundational math structures.

Why It Helps

These grade-appropriate input tools support mathematical learning by helping students:

  • communicate mathematical reasoning

  • write algebraic expressions

  • work with fractions, exponents, and equations

  • present work in a clean, organized format

This creates a smoother digital math-writing experience across grade levels.
