Can K–2 Students Use Lava?

Yes. Lava can be used in K–2 classrooms.

There are no strict restrictions preventing younger students from accessing Lava. Teachers can decide whether to enable Lava based on:

  • student independence

  • reading level

  • classroom routines

  • instructional goals

How Lava Supports Students

Lava provides:

  • step-by-step hints

  • guidance on next steps

  • feedback during problem solving

Hints are designed to:

  • encourage mathematical thinking

  • support understanding

  • guide students toward a solution

Lava is not intended to simply give students the answer.

Students can choose whether or not to use hints while working.

Is Lava Recommended for K–2?

Lava has continued to improve with:

  • simpler explanations

  • clearer language

  • more accessible support for younger learners

Because K–2 classrooms vary widely, we recommend teachers use professional judgment when deciding whether Lava is appropriate for their students and instructional setting.

Best Practices for Using Lava in K–2

Many teachers choose to:

  • use Lava during independent or guided practice

  • encourage students to attempt problems before requesting hints

  • treat Lava as a support tool rather than a solution guide

  • combine Lava with teacher conferencing and discussion
