What are sub work orders for?

Sub work orders break a larger job into separate tasks under one parent work order. Each sub work order has its own assignees, status, procedures and parts, and is typically created for one asset.

How do I create a sub work order?

  1. Open the parent work order.

  2. In the Sub Work Orders section, click Create.

  3. Fill in the sub work order and create it.

What are the rules for sub work orders?

  • A sub work order can have no asset or one asset. That asset must already be on the parent work order.

  • You can create several sub work orders for the same asset.

  • A parent can have any number of sub work orders.

  • There is only one level. A sub work order cannot have its own sub work orders.

How do company and assets work on sub work orders?

  • If the parent has a company, it is filled in on the sub work order and cannot be changed.

  • If the parent has no company or no assets, those fields are turned off on the sub work order until they are added to the parent.

  • If you add a company to the parent later, it is applied to its sub work orders automatically.

What works differently on a sub work order?

  • Procedures apply only to the sub work order's asset. Finalised procedures appear only in that asset's history.

  • Parts work like a normal work order, with no Asset column and no asset dropdown.

  • Asset custom fields appear only if the sub work order has an asset.

What happens when I close the parent?

If any sub work orders are still open, you are told that closing the parent will also close all its sub work orders. Confirm to close all of them.

Are sub work orders linked to tickets?

No. If the parent work order is linked to a ticket, its sub work orders are not linked to that ticket and do not show the ticket section.
