Overview
Maxanet supports six categories of Global Fees — Tax, Fee, Premium, Commission, Seller Fee, and Other. Each category serves a specific role in bidder invoicing or consignor settlement, and supports either a flat dollar amount or a percentage rate. This article explains what each category does and when to use it.
How to open the Global Fees page in Maxanet
From your Maxanet Admin panel, go to Admin → Configurations → Global Fees. Click the green Add button in the upper-right corner to create a new fee.
Tax category — Sales Tax on bidder invoices
The Tax category is for Sales Tax applied to bidder invoices. Enter either a flat rate or a percentage rate (most common). Enter percentages without the % symbol — for example, enter 8.75 for 8.75% Sales Tax. Tax rates apply to the taxable portion of the invoice (including any fees with the taxable flag turned on).
Fee category — optional item-level charges to the winning bidder
The Fee category is for optional item-level fees charged to the winner of the item — for example, a handling fee, processing fee, or custom charge. Fees have an optional Tax Applicable checkbox that makes the fee taxable (i.e., Sales Tax calculated on top of the fee).
Premium category — Buyer's Premium on winning bids
The Premium category is for Buyer's Premium applied to winning bids (flat rate or percentage). Premiums can be taxable and can be set up as a Sliding Scale (different premium rates at different bid tiers — see the Sliding Scale article for details).
Commission category — consignor settlement commission
The Commission category is applied to settlement reports for consignors, not to bidder invoices. Commissions can also be Sliding Scale (for example, 20% on the first $1000, then 10% above). Commissions are how auction companies charge consignors for selling their items.
Seller Fee category — optional fees on consignor settlements
The Seller Fee category is for optional additional fees applied to items on settlement reports — for example, a marketing fee, lotting fee, or storage fee charged to the consignor alongside the commission.
Other category — catch-all for miscellaneous fees
The Other category handles any fee that doesn't fit the above — use as needed for unusual one-off charges that you want saved as a reusable Global Fee.
Common questions
What's the difference between Fee and Premium?
Fee is a flexible catch-all for item-level charges to the bidder. Premium is specifically for Buyer's Premium, which supports sliding scales.
What's the difference between Commission and Seller Fee?
Commission is the percentage you charge consignors for selling their items (applied at the settlement level). Seller Fee is an optional additional per-item fee you charge consignors on top of commission (marketing, lotting, etc.).
Can a fee be both percentage-based and flat-rate?
No. Each fee is either flat or percentage. If you need both behaviors, create two separate fees with clearly different names.
How do I make a fee taxable?
When creating the fee, check the 'Tax Applicable' checkbox. Sales tax will be calculated on top of the fee amount.
Can I edit a Global Fee after saving it?
No. Global Fees are locked after saving to preserve historical invoicing accuracy. Delete and re-create with new values if you need to change a fee.
