LinkedIn Profile Monitoring vs. LinkedIn Keyword Monitoring

Learn the differences between monitoring profiles and keywords on LinkedIn and what data you get from each process.

Written by Evangelia

Mentionlytics offers two ways to monitor LinkedIn content: Profile Monitoring and Keyword Monitoring. While both help you stay informed about conversations on LinkedIn, they provide different types of data and have different requirements due to LinkedIn's API limitations.

LinkedIn Profile Monitoring

LinkedIn Profile Monitoring allows you to monitor the activity of your own LinkedIn Business Page.

To use this feature, you must authorize your LinkedIn Business Page within Mentionlytics.

What you'll get

Once your Business Page is authorized, Mentionlytics can monitor:

  • Posts published on your LinkedIn Business Page (owned media).

  • Comments on your Business Page's posts.

  • Page-level insights and performance metrics.

This option is ideal for organizations that want to track the performance and engagement of their own LinkedIn presence.

Note: Due to LinkedIn API restrictions, comments retrieved from your authorized Business Page are anonymized and do not include the commenter's identity.

LinkedIn Keyword Monitoring

LinkedIn Keyword Monitoring helps you discover public conversations related to specific keywords, brands, products, or topics.

Unlike Profile Monitoring, this feature does not require you to own or manage the pages where the mentions appear.

Instead, Mentionlytics searches publicly available content related to your keywords.

What you'll get

Keyword Monitoring provides a sample of mentions that are available publicly on the web.

Why are LinkedIn keyword results limited?

LinkedIn applies strict API restrictions that significantly limit access to public content. As a result:

  • Mentionlytics cannot retrieve every public LinkedIn post containing your keywords.

  • Keyword results are provided as samples, rather than a complete dataset.

  • The amount of available public data is significantly lower than on other social networks.

🤓Good to Know: These limitations are imposed by LinkedIn and apply to all platforms using LinkedIn's official APIs.

Which option should I use?

Choose LinkedIn Profile Monitoring if you want to:

  • Track your company's LinkedIn Business Page.

  • Measure engagement on your own content.

  • Monitor comments on your posts.

  • View page performance insights.

Choose LinkedIn Keyword Monitoring if you want to:

  • Discover public discussions about your brand, products, competitors, or industry.

  • Monitor broader conversations beyond your own Business Page.

  • Identify relevant LinkedIn mentions alongside results from other online sources.

For the most comprehensive coverage, we recommend using both Profile Monitoring and Keyword Monitoring together. This allows you to track the performance of your own LinkedIn presence while also monitoring publicly available conversations related to your brand and industry.
