How do I export a grocery list from the Meals tab?

Turn your weekly meal plan into a shopping list and send it to Notes, a text, email, or print — in a couple of taps.

You've built your plan for the week. Now you need to actually buy the food. The grocery list export pulls the ingredients straight out of your recipes so you're not copying them into your Notes app one line at a time.

Plan on Sunday, shop once, cook all week. ✨

Ways to export

You can build a list from several recipes at once, or grab the ingredients for just one.

  • From My Plan — the usual move. Pick the recipes you're shopping for this week and export them as a single list.

  • From a single recipe — handy when you're running out for one dinner, or you already have most of the week covered.

  • From the … menu — the fastest route for a single recipe that's already on your plan, without opening it or entering selection mode.

Exporting from My Plan

  1. Tap Meals in the bottom navigation, then open the My Plan tab.

  2. Tap Select in the top right of the recipe list.

  3. Tap the circle next to each recipe you want to shop for — tap them all if you're shopping for the whole week. The counter at the top keeps track: 2 Selected, 3 Selected, and so on.

  4. Tap Grocery in the bar at the bottom of the screen.

  5. Review your list in the Share Grocery List preview, then tap Share.

💡 Tip: Changed your mind mid-selection? Tap Deselect All to start over, or Cancel to leave selection mode entirely. Nothing is removed from your plan.

The other two buttons

While you're in selection mode, the bottom bar gives you three actions — so you can tidy up your plan in the same pass:

  • Cooked — marks the selected recipes as cooked and moves them to your Cooked tab.

  • Grocery — builds your shopping list.

  • Remove — takes the selected recipes off your plan.

Exporting from a single recipe

  1. Open any recipe — from My Plan, your Favorites, the recipe library, or your Cooked history.

  2. Scroll past the ingredients to the Export Grocery List button.

  3. Tap it, then tap Share.

The recipe doesn't have to be on your plan to do this, so you can browse, find something for tonight, and shop for it without committing it to your week.

The quick shortcut:

The menu on a recipe that's on your plan — either on its row in My Plan, or in the top right when you open it from there — has a Grocery List option that exports just that recipe. Same list, fewer taps. For a recipe that isn't on your plan, use the Export Grocery List button inside the recipe instead.

What's on the list

Your export is titled My Grocery List and dated the day you created it. Ingredients are grouped under the recipe they belong to, with the serving count next to each recipe name and the quantity next to each ingredient.

Each ingredient also shows a gram weight in brackets next to the cup or spoon measure — Olive oil (7g): 1/2 tbsp — so you can log it or scale it without converting anything yourself.

Grouping by recipe rather than by grocery aisle is deliberate — it means that if you decide in the store to skip a meal, you know exactly which items to drop.

🛒 The list covers the servings the recipe is written for. Recipe scaling isn't available in the app yet, so if you're cooking for more or fewer people, adjust the quantities after you export.

Where you can send it

Tapping Share opens your phone's standard share menu, so the list can go anywhere your other apps and contacts live:

  • Notes — the most popular option. Save it, then check items off in the store.

  • Reminders — each item becomes a tickable reminder, which some people prefer to Notes for shopping.

  • Messages — text it to whoever is doing the shopping.

  • Email — send it to yourself for the week.

  • Copy — paste it into whatever grocery or list app you already use.

  • Print — for a paper list on the fridge.

The exact options depend on your device and which apps you have installed.

Common questions

Can I edit the list before I send it?

Not inside the app — the preview is read-only. Once you've shared it to Notes or pasted it somewhere, you can edit it freely there. Adding your own staples (coffee, paper towels, the things that never make it onto a recipe) is easiest once the list has landed in Notes.

It's listing things I already have.

The export includes every ingredient a recipe calls for, including pantry staples like olive oil and salt. Optional extras are included too — anything a recipe lists under Optional (To Serve), like fresh herbs or a garnish, shows up on the list.

It has no way of knowing what's already in your cupboard, so give the list a quick scan before you shop, and remove anything you don't need.

Does the app save my grocery lists?

No — lists aren't stored in the app. Each export is generated fresh from the recipes you selected. If you want to keep one, share it to Notes or email it to yourself.

The Grocery button isn't doing anything.

The action bar appears as soon as you tap Select, but it stays greyed out until you've chosen at least one recipe — at 0 Selected, none of the three buttons will respond. Tap a recipe first. Also make sure you're on the My Plan tab; selection mode isn't available on Recipes, Favorites, or Cooked.
