What's the difference between calories, kcal and kilojoules?

Understand how energy units work and how they’re displayed in the app

Updated this week

In nutrition, kcal (kilocalories) and calories refer to the same unit of energy. You can read kcal simply as calories — no conversion is needed.

We use kcal in the app to match standard nutrition labels on food packaging and ensure consistency worldwide.

At the moment, the app does not support kilojoules (kJ) and displays energy values only in kcal for simplicity. If you’d like to convert kcal to kJ manually, use the following formula: 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ

Example:
200 kcal × 4.184 = 837 kJ

This way, you can easily interpret and compare energy values, even if your food packaging uses different units.
