What are Other calories?

Find out what Other calories are, why they appear, and how they’re calculated.

Other calories are calories that are not accounted for by protein, carbs, or fats.

In the Nutrition chart, calories are calculated based on the caloric density of each macronutrient per gram:

  • Protein: 4 kcal per gram

  • Carbs: 4 kcal per gram

  • Fat: 9 kcal per gram

If the total calorie value listed for a product is higher than the calories calculated using the caloric density of its protein, carbs, and fats, the difference is counted as Other calories. This can happen for several reasons:

  1. Minor database inaccuracies
Nutritional info in the database may not always match perfectly. For example, the calorie value listed for a product may differ slightly from the calories calculated using the caloric density of its protein, carbs, and fats.

  2. Alcohol
Alcohol provides energy at 7 kcal per gram, but it is not classified as protein, carbs, or fat. As a result, products containing alcohol may have calories that are counted as Other.

  3. Manual entry using New Food or Quick Add
If you create a food using New Food and enter a total calorie value that is higher than the calories calculated from its protein, carbs, and fat amounts, the difference will be counted as Other.
Similarly, if you use Quick Add and enter calories without specifying protein, carbs, or fat, those calories will be counted as Other.

Why is my 7 day total in the Nutrition Log lower than the Weekly Total?

In the Nutrition chart in the Progress section, Other calories are shown as a red bar and are included in the Weekly Total and Daily Average:

However, Other calories are not included in the Nutrition Log. The Nutrition Log calculates calories using the caloric density of protein, carbs, and fats. This is why the summed number of calories for 7 days in the Nutrition Log may be lower than the Weekly Total shown in the Nutrition chart:

Keeping the nutritional values of your logged foods accurate will help ensure your calorie totals and Nutrition chart reflect your data as accurately as possible.
