Thinking about installing a hot tub or cold plunge and wondering if it’s eligible through your Health Spending Account (HSA)? Here’s what you need to know.
Generally speaking, hot tubs, saunas, whirlpools, and ice baths installed at home are not eligible under your HSA. That’s because these types of items are considered personal or recreational in nature unless a medical practitioner confirms that the purchase is necessary for treating a specific medical condition.
When Could It Be Eligible?
To be eligible for reimbursement, a Letter of Medical Necessity must be included with your claim. This letter needs to:
Be written and signed by a medical practitioner (such as a physician)
Clearly state the medical condition being treated
Explain why this specific item is required
Confirm that it must be installed at home (versus using a public facility)
Be dated prior to the date of purchase or installation
