What is a myASO plan?
myASO is a defined spending account design that gives you more structure, control, and customization.
It allows you to incorporate any of our traditional plan types (myHSA, myWSA, or myFlexplan) into one flexible framework, while adding deeper customization at the category, sub-item, balance, and cap level.
In short: it combines the flexibility of a spending account with the structure of a traditional group plan.
Key Features of myASO
1. Benefit Buckets
Create dedicated funding “buckets” for specific purposes, such as:
Mental Health
Gender Affirmation
Executive Private Medical
Fertility
Orthodontics
Professional Development
And more
2. Specified Covered Items
Unlike a traditional HSA (where coverage is typically selected at the Dental / Vision / Extended Health level), myASO allows you to choose specific sub-items within those categories.
For example:
Cover basic dental expenses but exclude major dental expenses
Cover massage therapy but exclude other paramedicals
Cover prescription drugs only
This gives clients granular control over what is and is not eligible.
3. Specified Balances
myASO offers flexible balance structures beyond the traditional shared family balance. You can choose:
Pooled Balances
Each family member contributes a set amount into a shared pool for the family to use.
Individual Balances
Each family member receives their own dedicated balance that can only be applied to their claims. Balances can also vary by member type:
Employee
Spouse
Dependent children
4. Category & Sub-Item Caps
Caps can be applied at both the category and sub-item level.
Some examples include:
$250 on glasses every 2 years
Full cap on all paramedical services
Specific cap on orthodontics
Available cap durations:
1 month
6 months
1 year
18 months
2 years
3 years
5 years
Lifetime
There are two types of cap resets available:
Static Cap
Cap resets based on the plan’s effective date.
Dynamic Cap
Cap resets based on the employee’s first claim within that capped category. This allows for alignment with either plan-year budgeting or employee utilization timing.
Caps are applied in dollar amounts and can be used strategically to control plan spend.
6. Coverage Percentages
Unlike traditional HSA/WSA setups where coverage percentage applies to the entire plan, myASO allows you to adjust coverage at:
The category level
The sub-item level
For example:
All paramedicals at 80%
Basic dental at 80% and major dental at 50%
This adds another layer of cost control and customization.
Common Use Cases
Mimicking a Traditional Group Plan
For companies that prefer the structure of a traditional insured plan but have been priced out, myASO can replicate that structure using:
Category caps
Per-dependent balances
Defined coverage percentages
Specific eligible items
This creates predictability while maintaining defined-cost control.
Carving Out High-Cost Categories
If a specific benefit (such as prescription drugs) is driving up group premiums, myASO can be structured to cover only that category, reducing overall insurance spend while maintaining support where it’s needed most.
Supporting DEI & Strategic Initiatives
Instead of simply increasing HSA balances, myASO allows employers to create intentional buckets for:
Gender Affirmation
Mental Health
Fertility
Executive Health Programs
Professional Development
This ensures funds are used specifically for the initiatives the employer wants to support.
Cost Containment
myASO provides multiple built-in cost controls:
Dedicated buckets
Individual vs. pooled balances
Category and sub-item caps
Adjustable coverage percentages
This allows employers to distribute funds strategically while maintaining predictable plan spend.
