Birthing Classes are typically covered under an HSA, but only when the circumstances are just right. When considering reimbursement for birth classes, one of the primary determinants is the qualification of the instructor. To meet the eligibility criteria, the instructor must be a medical professional officially recognized by the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency), such as a Doctor, Nurse, or Midwife. This ensures that the information provided during the birth classes is accurate, up-to-date, and aligned with medical standards.

The claim submission must include the following

  • The birth-person's name, referring to the individual giving birth to the infant

  • The invoice should also include the practitioner's name, credentials, and their role in conducting the class.

  • The date or dates of the service(s)

  • Proof of payment

Please note that the student of the class must be the birth-person and not a support person or partner. This emphasis on medical necessity ensures that the classes are not only informative but also beneficial from a medical perspective, aligning with the CRA rules regarding these classes. The instructor-student relathionship must be that of a practitioner-patient nature as well, so classes must be attended by the patient and cannot be on-demand video tutorials preloaded with content etc.
