Health Spending Accounts (HSAs) serve as valuable financial tools for individuals managing healthcare expenses. Birth control, an essential component of reproductive health, is eligible for reimbursement under an HSA. In this article, we will delve into the specific eligibility criteria for birth control under an HSA, focusing on prescription drugs and intrauterine devices (IUDs) administered by medical professionals.

Health Spending Accounts allow for the reimbursement of certain birth control expenses, provided they fall into either of two categories: prescription drugs or IUDs administered by a medical professional. Notably, other forms of contraceptives, such as cycle tracking apps, condoms, and natural family planning courses, are not eligible for HSA reimbursement.

To be eligible for reimbursement under an HSA, prescription drugs must adhere to specific guidelines. Individuals are required to maintain an Official Prescription Receipt for each prescription claim. This receipt should include the information included in the in the sample image below:

IUDs Administered by Medical Professionals:

In addition to prescription drugs, IUDs administered by medical professionals are also eligible for reimbursement under an HSA. The medical practitioners name and credentials must be listed on the receipt for verification.
