Mental health services are an important aspect of overall well-being, and many of these services are eligible for reimbursement under a Health Spending Account (HSA). Here’s a comprehensive guide to understanding what mental health services you can claim for yourself or your dependents* through your HSA.

*Always check your plan details for coverage and dependent eligibility to ensure coverage as this article is for general purposes only

Eligible Mental Health Services

  1. Psychotherapy and Counselling

    • Services provided by licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counsellors are eligible.

    • Includes individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and group therapy sessions.

  2. Psychiatric Services

    • Visits to a psychiatrist for diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions are covered.

    • Prescription medications prescribed by a psychiatrist for mental health conditions can also be claimed, as long as they are obtained and submitted with an Official Prescription Receipt.

  3. Clinical Psychologist Services

    • Assessments, diagnoses, and treatment plans provided by a registered clinical psychologist.

    • Includes cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), and other evidence-based therapies.

  4. Social Worker Services

    • Counselling and support services provided by licensed social workers, especially those specializing in mental health.

    • Includes assistance with issues like depression, anxiety, stress management, and trauma.

  5. Marriage and Family Therapy

    • Therapy sessions focused on relationship issues, family dynamics, and marital problems.

    • Services must be provided by licensed practitioners (they cannot be purely spiritual leaders or life coaches)

  6. Substance Abuse Treatment

    • Counselling and therapy for substance use disorders, including alcohol and drug addiction.

    • Inpatient and outpatient treatment programs, as well as support groups led by licensed professionals, are eligible.

  7. Rehabilitation Services

    • Services provided by mental health professionals in a rehabilitation center or clinic.

    • Includes both short-term and long-term rehabilitation for mental health conditions.

  8. Behavioural Therapy

    • Therapy sessions aimed at modifying harmful behaviours and developing healthy coping mechanisms.

  9. Tele-therapy and Online Counselling

    • Remote therapy sessions conducted via video calls, phone calls, or online platforms are eligible, as long as the practitioner credentials are included in the receipt.

    • Must be provided by licensed mental health professionals.

*This list doesn't even cover all of the therapies that could be eligible! As long as your therapy is provided by a eligible practitioner, and it's a practitioner-patient relationship (Not a conference or presentation with a general audience) it is eligible!

Documentation Requirements

To claim these services under your HSA, you will typically need the following documentation:

  • Receipt or Invoice: A detailed receipt or invoice from the service provider showing the date of service, the type of service provided, the provider’s credentials, the patient name, and the amount charged.

  • Proof of Payment: Evidence that the payment was made, such as a credit card statement or bank transaction record.
