Understanding Bone Marrow Transplants

A bone marrow transplant is a medical procedure that replaces damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells. This treatment is crucial for individuals with certain types of cancers, blood disorders, or other serious health conditions. The procedure can be life-saving and is often recommended for patients who have not responded to other treatments.

Eligibility Criteria for Bone Marrow Transplants Under myHSA

To qualify for reimbursement under your Health Spending Account (HSA), the bone marrow transplant and related expenses must meet certain criteria:

The Procedure: Expenses for the procedure itself and associated services are eligible.

Travel, Board, and Lodging Expenses: Reasonable expenses for travel, board, and lodging for the donor and the patient are eligible if required. This also extends to a person accompanying the donor and a person accompanying the patient. If this is required, the patient must fill out the claim using our Travel Forms to keep track of the costs:

Legal Fees and Insurance Premiums: Costs incurred for legal services and insurance premiums related to locating a compatible donor and arranging the transplant are eligible for reimbursement.

A bone marrow transplant is a critical medical procedure that can save lives and improve the quality of life for patients with severe health conditions. Understanding the eligibility criteria for reimbursement under myHSA ensures that you can manage the financial aspects of this vital treatment effectively.
