Many people wonder if they can use their Health Spending Account (HSA) to purchase sunglasses. Here's what you need to know:

HSA Eligibility for Sunglasses

The eligibility of sunglasses under your HSA depends on whether they are prescription or non-prescription:

  1. Prescription Sunglasses: Good news! Prescription sunglasses are eligible for HSA reimbursement. They fall under the category "Vision - Eye glasses, Contact Lens or Sunglasses (prescribed)".

  2. Non-Prescription Sunglasses: Unfortunately, non-prescription sunglasses are not eligible for HSA reimbursement unless they are accompanied by a letter of medical necessity stating that they are being prescribed to treat or prevent a specific condition.

Important Caveat: Always double-check your specific plan details on your dashboard to confirm sunglasses eligibility. HSA plans may vary, and it's crucial to verify your coverage and the list of covered items.

Alternative Options for Non-Prescription Sunglasses

If you have a Wellness Spending Account (WSA), you may be able to use it for non-prescription sunglasses. Check if your WSA includes either of these categories:

  • "Prescription or Non-Prescription Eye Wear (Taxable)"

  • "Sun-care (Taxable)"

If your WSA includes either of these categories, non-prescription sunglasses would be eligible for reimbursement through your WSA.
