Overview
FedEx Ground Economy — previously called SmartPost — is a cost-effective residential delivery service that hands off packages to USPS for final-mile delivery. It's commonly used for lightweight, non-urgent shipments. Logiwa IO supports Ground Economy as a FedEx shipping option, but it requires one additional piece of setup beyond a standard FedEx connection: a Hub ID.
When to Use It
Use FedEx Ground Economy when:
You want a lower-cost alternative to standard FedEx Ground for lightweight parcels
Your shipments are going to residential addresses and are not time-sensitive
Your FedEx account is enabled for Ground Economy / SmartPost service
Prerequisites
Before shipping with Ground Economy, ensure:
Your FedEx account is enabled for Ground Economy (SmartPost) service — contact your FedEx account representative if you're unsure
You have your nearest FedEx Ground Economy Hub ID on hand
Your FedEx carrier connection is already set up in Logiwa IO (see the FedEx Integration article)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Navigate to Integrations > Shipping and open your existing FedEx carrier connection (or create a new one).
Go to the Advanced > Other Information section.
In the Hub ID field, enter your FedEx Ground Economy hub ID.
Click Save (or Finish if you're completing initial setup).
When creating a shipment, select the Ground Economy (SmartPost) service from your available shipping options.
Confirm: you should see the shipment processed and a label generated using the Ground Economy service.

Common Questions & Edge Cases
I selected Ground Economy but the label came back as a different service. Why?
Ground Economy requires a Hub ID to be set on your FedEx carrier connection. If it's missing, Logiwa IO will not include Ground Economy routing information in the request — check your carrier setup first.
Does Ground Economy work for multi-package shipments?
Yes, but each package is sent to FedEx as a separate request rather than as one combined shipment. This is handled automatically and doesn't require any extra steps on your part.
Is Ground Economy available for international shipments?
No — like SmartPost before it, Ground Economy is a domestic residential delivery service only.
