Workflows offer a simplified way to automate routine tasks that take up valuable time during day-to-day operations. With a few simple steps, you can take automation rules and turn them into a visual flowchart. This flowchart will show you the trigger, conditions, and actions that make up the workflow, making it easy to understand and follow. When it's all put together, you'll have an automated process that saves time and effort.

Components

A workflow is defined by the following:

  1. Triggers: What starts the workflow.

  2. Conditions: What criteria must be met once the trigger starts the workflow.

  3. Actions: What action is applied once conditions are met.

Usages

There are multiple workflows that can be applied in order to save time. A few common usages include:

  • Auto-selecting the right shipping carrier service, depending on the order's weight, value, destination, and customer choice.

  • Configuring insurance and insurance amount based on the order's price.

  • Setting the shipment's weight and dimensions to orders when they contain certain products and package types.

  • Adding notes to orders when they contain certain products.

  • Assigning a different shipping carrier if the order's weight is very high.

Example

Say you want to prioritize orders purchased through Shopify. The image below shows an what that would look like:

Heads Up

Automation rules are powerful tools that can streamline your process. However, use them with caution, as they can automatically change shipping preferences and charge your postage and shipping accounts if set in certain ways.

It is best to test rules on a small selection of orders (e.g. 2-4 orders) before applying them more broadly. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the shipping services in detail, and read all of the relevant documentation prior to auto-shipping orders.
