In Logiwa, there are two different pack types that you can apply and use for your SKUs: UOM Pack Type and Parent Pack Type. This article discusses what these pack types are and how they are defined.

UOM Pack Type
UOM Pack Type defines how you can buy, count, and sell a specific item.
UOM is the abbreviation of Unit of Measure.
UOM pack type examples: Each, Piece, Pack, Box
By tracking this pack type, you can ensure the storage and sales of the minimum processable unit for your SKUs.
Scenario: A store may buy and sell six-pack soda cans. If these six-packs cannot be sold as single cans, set a pack type (like Pack or Case) that indicates this as your UOM pack type.
Parent Pack Type
Parent Pack Type defines the container that has your UOM pack types in it.
Parent pack type tracks the amount of UOM pack types in it. This amount is called the Ratio or UOM Ratio.
Examples: Pack, Box, Case, Pallet
Scenario: Once again, a store may buy and sell six-pack soda cans. Instead of only selling six-packs, this store also allows customers to buy one can at a time. This requires some additional setup within Logiwa and can be done in two different ways:
1. Create 2 Different SKUs
If you don't want to disassemble your six-pack cans, you have to define 2 different SKUs to separate this inventory. Keep in mind, if stock-out occurs for one of them, you will not able to fulfill this order with other pack types because of the separate SKUs.
2. Parent Pack Type Management
For this method, you will need 2 different pack types, such as Can and Pack. Our SKU is a single Can and we define a parent pack type with Pack which includes 6 Cans in it. In this example, our UOM Ratio is 6.
A Closer Look at Sellable Quantity
The most confusing part of the pack types may be the sellable quantity. Take a look at these 2 examples to clear up this confusion.
1. Our store sells this pack. What are the UOM Pack Type and Parent Pack Type?
This package, despite containing 15 single-use products, is not a Parent Pack Type, because you would not sell the single-use products individually, as they are not labeled for individual sale.
In this case, your Parent Pack Type would be the shipping box that they came from the vendor in.
2. Our store sells this pack. What are your UOM Pack Type and Parent Pack Type?
This package contains 28 single-use products that are labeled for individual sale. In this case, the customer can buy both a single pack and the box itself.
Your UOM pack type can be Each or Piece. Your parent pack type is Box with a 28 UOM ratio.
