Changes and Timeline Regarding Upcoming WePay Service Shutdown - FAQ

If you are one of our nonprofit customers using WePay as your payment processor, we'd like to provide an update on the end of that service.

Updated over a week ago

If you are one of our nonprofit customers who is currently using WePay as your payment processor, we'd like to provide an update on the end of that particular service.

What changes are being made to WePay?

Bonterra was informed that WePay's credit card processing service will be shut down, and no longer will be available for our nonprofit customers to use on their Fundraising Pages.

When will WePay be ending their credit card processing service?

WePay has stated that the last day to process credit cards using their service will be December 16th, 2023.

Why is WePay ending this service?

JPMorgan Chase, which acquired WePay in 2017, have made the decision to shut down this service moving forward. Unfortunately, we have not been provided any additional information with respect to this decision.

How will this affect me or my donors?

Unfortunately, this decision will affect thousands of nonprofits and businesses who currently rely on WePay to process credit card transactions - not just customers who process payments through Bonterra's Fundraising Pages.

As a nonprofit organization, you will need to switch your payment processor to Bonterra Payments to continue to process donations by that December 16th deadline.

We have a detailed guide on setting up Bonterra Payments, which can be found here.

If you do not make the switch to Bonterra Payments by that date, any donations made moving forward will fail to process.

If my organization is impacted, what are my next steps?

If impacted, your next step should be to transition your payment processor from WePay to our newest payment gateway, Bonterra Payments.

You do not need to wait until that December 16th deadline to make this switch - in fact, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible to make sure your donor's giving processes aren't interrupted in any way.

The process of signing up for Bonterra Payments typically takes about ten minutes, and can be done directly from your Fundraising Pages account. The next time you log in, simply click on the banner at the top of the page titled "Get Started with Stripe," and follow the set-up prompts.

We do have a detailed step-by-step guide on how to set up Bonterra Payments, which can be found here for your convenience.

What happens if I don't switch our payment process to Bonterra Payments by December 16th?

If you don't complete this process by December 16th, then all of your organization's transactions will fail to process going forward. This includes donations, ticket sales, sponsorships, and peer-to-peer fundraising.

Due to this, we strongly encourage you to sign up for Bonterra Payments as soon as possible.

What will happen with our recurring donations? Will our donors need to perform any additional actions to make sure those recurring donations process?

We are currently working with WePay to move any recurring donors from WePay to Bonterra Payments directly.

At this time, we are fully dependent on WePay to make this process happen - so we will keep you updated as we receive more information and instruction from WePay around this important transition.
