If you’re here to learn how to set your default speakers on either a Mac or Windows PC, you’ve come to the right place. Ensuring your sound is coming through the right speakers makes all the difference. Let’s dive in and get your audio settings tuned to perfection!

For Mac Users

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your screen to open the Apple menu.

  2. Select System Preferences to enter your system settings.

  3. Click on Sound, which you'll find represented by a speaker icon.

  4. Navigate to the Output tab to see a list of available sound devices.

  5. Choose your desired speakers from the list. If you’re using headphones, they’ll appear here by name.

  6. Adjust the Output volume slider at the bottom to test and set the volume to your preference.

Pro Tip: If you’re a fan of shortcuts, you can also hold down the Option key and click the speaker icon in the menu bar to switch between audio outputs quickly!

For Windows Users

  1. Right-click on the Speaker icon in your system tray, typically found in the bottom-right corner of your screen.

  2. Select Sounds from the menu that appears.

  3. In the window that opens, switch to the Playback tab where you'll see a list of playback devices.

  4. Identify your desired speakers/headset in the list (they’ll usually have a green checkmark if they’re connected).

  5. Click to highlight your desired speakers/headset, then click Set Default to make them the primary audio output device.

  6. Hit the Properties button to fine-tune your speaker settings such as levels and enhancements, ensuring your audio experience is tailored to your liking.

  7. Once you’re happy with the settings, click OK or Apply to save your changes.

Note: Remember that some applications may manage their own audio settings. Be sure to check the audio preferences within individual apps if you’re not hearing things as expected.
