Are these classes okay if I'm coming back from an injury?

Yes, many of our classes are if you’re coming back from an injury – we want you to feel safe and supported here on Ompractice!

Provided that you are cleared by your doctor to practice, we have a handful of tips to make sure that you can practice safely as you are getting back to action!

Our teachers are trained to offer modifications and guidance to support your recovery journey, and we have a handful of tools (including updating your health notes) that will keep you safe as you ease back into things.

1. Focus on Safety:

  • Our teachers are well-versed in injury prevention and recovery. They can provide clear instructions and modifications to ensure you can participate safely – and please make sure that you update your health notes so that your teacher knows what kind of modifications they may need. You can update your general health note in your account settings here (scroll down to "anything your teacher should know")

  • We encourage you to listen to your body and take breaks as needed – coming back we want you to take it slow!

  • Worst-Case Scenario: We also encourage you to update your emergency details in the app, so we could reach out to emergency services if the need ever arises.

2. Gentle and Low-Impact Classes:

  • We offer a variety of gentle and low-impact classes specifically designed to accommodate those recovering from injuries. Look for classes labeled “Gentle”

  • Non-movement options: Any of our meditation, iRest yoga nidra, or sound classes are accessible to those who can't move at all.

  • Switch to seated: although typically standing, our Tai Chi classes can be taken seated, additionally, we have chair classes for those with limited mobility (currently Chair Yoga with Marie Scicchitano (45 min) on Wednesdays at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT). Yoga for Tight Shoulders and Neck is also seated, and meets several times a week.

3. Communication with Teachers or the Ompractice Team:

  • Before class, let your instructor know about your injury and any specific concerns you have in your class-specific health notes. They can offer personalized modifications and guidance, while keeping your privacy. (You can also send a direct message chat to your teacher in Zoom!)

  • We want to help! Our teachers will look out for you, but feel free to ask questions and request additional demo, modifications or explanations if needed.

  • After class, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask your teacher, or feel free to ask us a question in your class feedback form.

Common Concerns:

  • What if I experience pain during the class? You might experience some discomfort as you are getting back into movement, but if you experience acute pain, generally, we recommend that you stop doing the movement. Your teacher can suggest modifications or alternative exercises in the moment, and you are welcome to rest.

  • Can I start classes right after my injury? We recommend not jumping back in too quickly. You'll want to get cleared by your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routine post-injury. (Many of our students come for the mental health benefits - if you are currently not cleared for practice, we have meditation and mindfulness classes that might support your recovery until you can practice again.)

  • How do I find classes suitable for my condition? Use our class filters to search for gentle, low-impact, or pain specific classes. If you’re unsure, our team can help you select the right classes for your needs.

Complicated situation? Don't hesitate to reach out to us directly, and we're happy to talk through recommendations for you. We work with many students who are dealing with lifelong and chronic injuries, pain, and challenges, and we'd love to support you as best as we can!

Ready to ease back into your fitness routine? Recovering from an injury can be challenging, but we're here to support you as you safely rebuild your strength and flexibility.
