What Level of Fitness Do I Need to Be to Get Started?

At Ompractice, we genuinely welcome all fitness levels (including none!) – you'll find folks in our community who are coming from all different backgrounds. Almost half of our students are beginners (or just getting started again after a long time away.)

💪 Most importantly: you don't need to be fit, or flexible, or "in shape" to find yourself at home here!

We're a welcoming bunch! (I'm biased, of course). But most of our community is here to simply get a little more active, find a little bit of stress relief, ward off aches and pains, age well, learn new skills, and find community.

Beginner-Friendly Classes:

  • We offer a range of beginner-friendly and gentle classes that require no prior experience. Look for classes labeled “Beginner,” “Intro,” on the schedule, or use the schedule filter to toggle these classes: click "no experience required"

  • Our teachers provide clear instructions and modifications to help you start safely and confidently – we want you to feel confident that you can start wherever you are here!

  • When you fill out our onboarding, we'll ask you a few questions about your experience level and interests, and make specific recommendations for you both of our live classes and our video library.

Accessible for All:

  • Our classes are designed to be inclusive and accessible. Whether you have specific health concerns, mobility limitations, or are coming back from an injury, our teachers will meet you where you are.

Support and Guidance:

  • Our teachers are trained to support students of all levels – even in the same class.

Common Concerns:

I’ve never done yoga/fitness/meditation before. Can I still join?

  • Absolutely! Our beginner-friendly classes are perfect for newcomers. We have short classes you can jump in for just a taste, or longer classes where you can go on a deeper dive to learn a new skill.

I’m out of shape. Can I still do these classes?

  • Yes, our classes are designed to help you gradually build fitness and strength. Start with gentle or beginner classes and progress at your own pace!

I have specific health concerns. Will I be able to participate?

How do I find the right class for my level?

  • Use our class filters to search for beginner, intro, seated, and gentle classes. Our team is also available to help you find the best classes for your fitness level.

I'm a senior, what classes do you have for me?

I'm a beginner, but I want to work a sweat! Do you have classes that I can keep up with?

  • Yes! Some of our longer beginner classes will provide a healthy challenge for you! You are also welcome to jump into some of our vinyasa classes even without experience. Our tai chi and strength classes are all levels, and can be modified to your needs!

If I find that a class is too hard for me, what do I do?

  • We always encourage that you take it slow and try what you can! Don't worry about following along with the rest of the class, and feel free to take the rest you need, or ask the teacher to slow down a demonstration for you. If you need to take a break, that's okay! (Our teachers might recommend a supported posture like "child's pose" or even lying on your back or your mat for a few minutes to catch your breath and take a pause.

Okay, but what if I just want to leave class because I'm not feeling it?

  • That's okay too! If you have to leave a class early, just let us know in your feedback form, and we can try to help you find something that works better for you! (We do recommend dropping a quick note in chat to let your teacher know - just so that they don't worry!)
