Recipient PIN for Tasks

In this article, you will learn how to add a PIN that recipient's will need to provide the driver to be able to successfully complete a task.

Recipient PIN Verification adds a chain-of-custody check to your deliveries. When enabled, the recipient confirms a one-time PIN code at the door before the driver can complete the delivery. This provides indisputable proof that the parcel reached the correct person and is especially valuable for high-value shipments or security-sensitive deliveries.

Note: Recipient PIN is only available on Enterprise plans.

How to enable Recipient PIN Verification

Once the feature is enabled, choose one of three ways to set PINs on your tasks:

Option A: Dashboard (Task Modal)

  1. Create or open a task

  2. In the task modal, locate the "Requirements" section

  3. Toggle on "PIN Verification"

  4. (Optional) Enter a custom 4-digit PIN, or leave blank to auto-generate one

  5. Save the task

The recipient will automatically receive the PIN by SMS when the driver marks the delivery as on the way.

Option B: CSV Import

When uploading tasks via CSV:

  1. Include a pin_verification column (set to true to enable)

  2. (Optional) Add a pin column with a custom 4-digit code

  3. If pin_verification: true but no PIN is provided, one is auto-generated

  4. Upload your CSV as normal

Option C: API

Use the Onfleet API to create or update tasks with PIN requirements. See the API documentation for full details.

How Recipient PIN Verification works

For Recipients

When a driver is on the way:

  • Recipient receives a text message with their unique PIN code

  • PIN is also available on the customer tracking page (if enabled by the dispatcher)

  • Recipient shares the code with the driver at the door

  • No PIN or an incorrect PIN means the driver cannot complete the delivery

For Drivers

During delivery:

  • Driver arrives at the address

  • After confirming the recipient's identity, driver opens the Onfleet app and navigates to the task

  • Driver enters the 4-digit PIN to complete the task

  • If PIN is incorrect, the app rejects it and the delivery remains incomplete

  • Driver can complete the task only with the correct PIN

Works offline: The driver app can verify the PIN even with no cellular signal, making it reliable in areas with poor connectivity.

For Dispatchers

You can view and manage PINs from the dashboard:

  • View PIN: Click into a task to see the 4-digit code assigned to that delivery

  • Help recipients: If a recipient didn't receive the SMS or forgot the code, you can read the PIN from the dashboard and relay it

  • View tracking page: You can choose whether to display the PIN on the customer-facing tracking page

  • Monitor: View which tasks have been verified with a PIN and which are pending
