I'm seeing "BreadcrumbList" errors in my structured data! What should I do?

Don’t panic — here’s what’s going on

If you’ve logged into Google Search Console and suddenly see hundreds of new errors for “BreadcrumbList,” you’re not alone. Google updated its structured data requirements (again) — this time in September. They make changes like this every couple of months, and Ongoing SEO keeps our code up to date so your rich snippets stay eligible.

These new errors usually appear on every page of your site, which is why the numbers look so high.

Important: Ongoing SEO doesn’t cause these errors. In fact, we don’t add BreadcrumbList structured data at all.

Why you’re seeing so many errors

The BreadcrumbList errors are coming from your Shopify theme’s built-in structured data. Most themes ship with “free” structured data included, but many theme developers don’t update it when Google changes the rules.

That outdated code is what’s triggering the red error messages when you run a page through Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool.

Do these errors hurt your SEO?

No — not if Google can find a better source of structured data, which it will with Ongoing SEO installed. We give Google complete, correct JSON-LD markup, so they’ll use ours and ignore the broken theme code.

How to fix it (optional)

If the red errors still bother you, contact your theme developer and:

  1. Ask them to update their BreadcrumbList structured data to meet Google’s latest requirements.

  2. Or, request that they remove it entirely so only Ongoing SEO’s clean data is used.

But remember — you don’t have to fix it for Google to understand your site. Ongoing SEO already ensures your structured data is valid and optimized.
