Understanding Minnesota DIRS reporting in jmc

Manage, track, and report state-required discipline incidents with built-in tools that support accurate Minnesota DIRS reporting.

Written by Rachel Cox

Minnesota’s Disciplinary Incident Reporting System (DIRS) is a state-required process for tracking and submitting specific student discipline incidents to the Minnesota Department of Education.

Within jmc, DIRS reporting is not a separate task completed at the end of the year. Instead, it is built directly into the discipline workflow, allowing schools to capture all required information as incidents are recorded. By embedding DIRS requirements into everyday discipline entry, jmc reduces manual work, minimizes errors, and helps districts stay compliant with Minnesota reporting standards.

Recording Discipline Incidents

Creating a discipline incident record on the Edit Student Discipline page in jmc Office captures details about a student’s involvement in a disciplinary event, including behaviors, actions taken, and any state-reportable outcomes. Each record stores the information needed to support Minnesota DIRS reporting, helping maintain complete and accurate data for submission.

  • Unknown Offender: a selection in the "Find" field used to record a discipline incident when details about the offender are unknown

  • Add New button: adds a new discipline incident record and documents each disciplinary event involving a student

  • Problem Behavior and Action: drop-down fields used to select state-aligned incident types and resulting actions that determine whether the record is DIRS-reportable

  • Conditional fields: fields that appear based on selected behaviors and actions, used to enter all required details for state reporting

Editing a Discipline Incident

The Edit Discipline Incident page in jmc Office allows users to manage and update victim information for existing discipline incidents, including students who are not part of the district, teachers, or other district staff. This ensures all parties involved in an incident are accurately documented for reporting purposes.

  • Discipline incident: a drop-down list used to select an existing discipline incident to view or update associated victim information

  • Add Victim button: adds a new victim row to the selected incident for documenting additional individuals involved

  • Edit button: allows users to update information for an existing victim entry

  • Victim Name: a field used to enter the individual's name or designate the victim as unknown when identification is not available

  • Victim Type: a drop-down list used to classify the victim as a student without known MARSS information, a teacher, or another district employee

  • Print and Export buttons: generate a printed copy or export victim data for school records or reporting purposes

Editing School DIRS Information

The Edit DIRS School Info page in jmc Office allows schools to review and update building-level information required for Minnesota DIRS reporting. Each building (such as an elementary, middle, or high school) is listed on its own row, with a combination of fixed and editable fields used to support accurate state reporting.

  • Edit button: allows users to update reporting details for a selected building

  • Number of Habitual Truants field: a text field used to enter the total number of habitually truant students for the building, typically completed at the end of the year

Exporting a DIRS File

The Export DIRS File page in jmc Office allows users to generate and review the data file used to submit discipline incident information to the Minnesota Department of Education. From this page, users can validate their data, review a summary, and create the XML file required for DIRS reporting.

  • Check Errors button: reviews discipline data for missing or invalid information that may prevent successful DIRS submission

  • Print Summary Report button: generates a report summarizing DIRS data for review and verification prior to submission

  • Create File button: generates the XML file that can be uploaded to the Minnesota Department of Education for official DIRS reporting
