Order Editing Settings

This article covers every setting available in the Order Editing configuration. Navigate to Order Editing > Settings in the Onward merchant dashboard to access these options.

Go Live

Activates (or deactivates) customer-facing order editing.

When turned on:

  • New orders will include the "Edit your order" link in confirmation emails.

  • Orders are held from fulfillment during the editing window.

  • Customers can access the editing page and make changes.

When turned off:

  • Order Editing is disabled. No editing links are sent, and no fulfillment holds are placed.

  • Existing orders that are still within their editing window will no longer be editable.

Editing Deadline

Sets the number of minutes after order creation during which customers can edit their order.

  • Default: 30 minutes

  • Minimum: 1 minute

During this window, the order is held from fulfillment. Once the deadline passes, the order is released and the customer can no longer make changes.

Things to consider:

  • A shorter window (15 minutes) means faster fulfillment but less time for customers to catch mistakes.

  • A longer window (60+ minutes) gives customers more flexibility but delays when orders start shipping.

  • The countdown timer is displayed on the editing page, so customers always know how much time they have.

Allow Address Edits

Lets customers update the shipping address on their order.

When enabled, customers see their current shipping address on the editing page with an "Edit" button. Clicking it opens a form where they can update:

  • First name, last name

  • Street address (line 1 and line 2)

  • City, state/province, postal code

  • Phone number

  • Company name

The address is validated before saving (required fields vary by country). Once saved, the updated address syncs to Shopify and an "Address updated" email is sent to the customer.

When to enable: Almost always. Address corrections are one of the most common post-purchase support requests.

Allow Quantity Changes

Lets customers increase or decrease item quantities on their order.

When enabled, each item on the editing page shows a quantity stepper (+ / −) control. Customers can:

  • Increase quantities — Adds more of the same item. The order total goes up, and the customer pays the difference.

  • Decrease quantities — Reduces the item count. The order total goes down, and the customer receives a refund for the difference.

  • Remove items — Setting quantity to 0 removes the item entirely (with a confirmation prompt).

Note: If "Allow order cancellations" is disabled, customers must always keep at least one item on the order — they cannot remove the last item.

When to enable: Recommended for most stores. Lets customers fix quantity mistakes without contacting support.

Allow Variant Changes

Lets customers swap to a different variant (e.g., size, color) of an existing item on their order.

When enabled, items with multiple variants show an "Edit" link. Clicking it opens a product detail modal showing all available variants. The customer selects a new option (e.g., switches from "Medium" to "Large") and confirms the swap.

  • If the new variant is the same price, no payment or refund is needed.

  • If the new variant costs more, the customer pays the difference.

  • If the new variant costs less, the customer receives a refund.

When to enable: Great for apparel, accessories, or any store where size/color mistakes are common.

Allow Order Cancellations

Lets customers remove all items from their order, effectively cancelling it and receiving a full refund.

When enabled, customers can remove items down to zero — including the last item. Removing the last item triggers a confirmation modal explaining that this will cancel the order and issue a refund.

When disabled, the customer must always keep at least one item on the order. They can still reduce quantities and remove individual items, but they can't empty the order entirely.

When to enable: If you want to offer a full self-service cancellation experience. Disable this if you prefer to handle cancellation requests through your support team.

Allow Discount Codes

Lets customers apply discount codes to their order after checkout.

When enabled, customers can enter a discount code they forgot to use during checkout. The discount is applied to the order, reducing the total and triggering a refund for the difference.

Note: This feature is currently available to select merchants. Contact Onward support if you're interested in enabling it.

When to enable: If your store frequently runs promotions and customers often reach out about forgotten discount codes.

Allow Order Upsells

Presents customers with recommended products they can add to their order after checkout.

When enabled, a "Recommended Just for You" product carousel appears on the editing page. Customers can browse products, select a variant, choose a quantity, and add items to their order.

Universal Discount Rate

Set a percentage discount (0–100%) that automatically applies to all upsell items. For example, setting this to 15% means every product added through the upsell carousel is 15% off.

  • Set to 0% if you don't want to offer a discount on upsells.

  • The discount is shown on the product cards and the order summary.

Upsell Collection

Select a Shopify product collection to power the upsell carousel. The first 9 products from the collection are displayed on the editing page.

Tips:

  • Create a dedicated collection for upsells with your best cross-sell products.

  • Include a mix of complementary products — accessories, add-ons, and popular items.

  • Keep the collection fresh by updating it seasonally or based on trending products.

When to enable: If you want to increase average order value. Post-purchase upsells have high conversion rates because the customer has already committed to buying.

Allow Adding Onward Protection

Lets customers add Onward Checkout+ (shipping protection) to their order after checkout.

When enabled, an "Add Onward Checkout+" section appears on the editing page showing the protection price and a description. Customers can add it with one click.

This is especially valuable for customers who skipped protection during checkout but change their mind — rather than placing a new order, they can add it to their existing one.

When to enable: If your store offers Onward Checkout+ and you want to give customers a second chance to add protection.

Saving Your Settings

After making changes, click "Save Settings" at the bottom of the page. Changes take effect immediately for all new orders.

Note: Changes to settings only affect orders placed after the settings are saved. Orders already within their editing window will continue using the settings that were active when they were placed.
