This article walks through exactly what your customers see when they use Order Editing — from accessing the page to confirming their changes.
Accessing the Editing Page
After placing an order, customers can reach their editing page from two places:
Order Confirmation Email
The Onward order confirmation email includes a section titled "Need to edit your order?" with a description like:
Make changes to your order for up to 30 minutes after purchase.
Below the description is an "Edit order" link that takes the customer directly to their editing page.
Shopify Thank-You Page
The editing link can also appear on the Shopify post-checkout confirmation page, giving customers immediate access right after placing their order.
The Editing Page
When a customer opens the editing page, they see a clean, branded layout with their order details and available editing options.
Countdown Timer
At the top-right of the page, a countdown timer shows exactly how much time is left to make changes:
Time left to edit: 24:37
Once the timer reaches zero, the editing window closes and the page can no longer accept changes.
Page Layout
The editing page is organized into two columns:
Left column — Editing options:
Upsell product carousel (if enabled)
Shipping address section
Onward protection section (if enabled)
Product list with editing controls
Right column — Order summary:
Line items with quantities and prices
Subtotal, shipping, taxes, and total
Amount due or refund amount (if edits change the total)
Confirm / Pay / Cancel buttons
Editing the Shipping Address
If address editing is enabled, the customer sees their current shipping address with an "Edit" button.
Click "Edit" to open the address form.
Update any fields: name, street address, city, state/province, postal code, phone number, or company.
Click "Save" to apply the change.
The address update is saved immediately — no need to separately confirm. The customer receives an email confirming the address change.
Note: Address edits are applied directly and don't require the customer to click a separate "Confirm changes" button. The address is updated on Shopify right away.
Changing Item Quantities
If quantity changes are enabled, each product in the order shows a quantity stepper (+ / −) control.
Click "+" to increase the quantity. The order total goes up.
Click "−" to decrease the quantity. The order total goes down.
Changes are reflected in the order summary in real time. The customer confirms all changes together at the end.
Removing an Item
Next to the quantity stepper, a "Remove" link lets the customer remove an item entirely (set quantity to 0).
Clicking "Remove" opens a confirmation modal:
Remove this item? This item will be removed from your order.
The customer confirms or dismisses the removal.
Removing the Last Item (Cancellation)
If order cancellations are allowed and the customer tries to remove the last remaining item, a special confirmation modal appears:
Cancel your order? Removing this item will cancel your order. You'll receive a full refund.
If cancellations are not allowed, the customer cannot reduce below one item. The "Remove" option is hidden for the last item.
Swapping Variants
If variant changes are enabled, items with multiple options (size, color, etc.) show an "Edit" link below the product name.
Click "Edit" to open the variant selector modal.
The modal shows the product image, all available options (e.g., Size: S / M / L / XL), and the price.
Select the desired options.
Click "Update selection" to apply the swap.
The original variant is replaced with the new one. If there's a price difference, it's reflected in the order summary.
Badges in the order summary:
"Updated" — Shown next to items whose variant was changed.
The original variant name appears with a strikethrough, followed by the new variant name.
Adding Upsell Products
If upsells are enabled, a "Recommended Just for You" carousel appears at the top of the editing page showcasing products from your selected collection.
Browse the carousel using the left/right arrows.
Click a product to open the product detail modal.
Select a variant (if applicable) and quantity.
Click "Add to order" to add the product.
The item appears in the order with an "Added" badge. If a universal discount is configured, the original price is shown with a strikethrough alongside the discounted price.
Removing an upsell: Upsell items can be removed from the order just like any other item.
Adding Onward Protection
If adding protection is enabled and the order doesn't already have Onward Checkout+, an "Add Onward Checkout+" section appears.
It shows:
The protection product image
A description of what's covered
The protection price
An "Add" button
Click "Add" and the protection is added to the order. The section updates to show "Added" with a checkmark.
The Order Summary
The right column shows a live order summary that updates as the customer makes changes.
Line Items
Each item shows:
Product image, name, and variant
Quantity (with a badge if quantities changed in the current session)
Price (with strikethrough if discounted via upsell)
Badges:
"Added: 1" (green) — Quantity was increased.
"Removed: 1" (red) — Quantity was decreased.
"Updated" (green) — Variant was changed.
Removed items appear faded with a strikethrough price.
Price Breakdown
Line | Description |
Subtotal | Total for all items before shipping and tax. |
Shipping | Shipping cost (unchanged by edits). |
Taxes | Updated tax amount based on the new order total. |
Total | The new order total. |
Paid | How much the customer already paid at checkout. |
Remaining | Additional amount the customer owes (if edits increased the total). |
Refund amount | Amount the customer will receive back (if edits decreased the total). |
Confirming Changes
Once the customer is happy with their edits, they click the action button at the bottom of the summary:
Scenario | Button Label | What Happens |
Edits increased the total | "Pay now ($X.XX)" | Customer is taken to Shopify checkout to pay the difference. |
Edits decreased the total | "Receive $X.XX back" | A refund is issued and the order is updated. |
Total is unchanged | "Confirm changes" | Changes are applied with no payment or refund. |
After confirming, the order is updated in Shopify and the customer receives an "Order updated" email.
Cancelling Edits
If the customer made changes but decides they don't want them, they can click
"Cancel edit" at the bottom of the page. This reverts the order to its original state — no changes are saved.
A confirmation modal appears:
Cancel your edits? Your order will revert to its original state.
After the Editing Window Closes
Once the countdown timer reaches zero:
The editing page is no longer interactive.
The fulfillment hold is released.
The order moves forward for fulfillment and shipping.
The customer can no longer make changes through Order Editing.
