Getting Onward Order Editing up and running takes just a few minutes. This guide walks you through the setup process step by step.
Step 1: Navigate to Order Editing Settings
In the Onward merchant dashboard, go to Settings > Order Editing from the left sidebar.
Step 2: Configure Your Settings
Before going live, take a moment to configure your editing options.
Set Your Editing Deadline
The Editing Deadline is the number of minutes after order creation during which customers can make changes. While the editing window is active, Onward holds the order from fulfillment.
The default is 30 minutes.
Choose a window that gives customers enough time to catch mistakes without delaying fulfillment too long.
Popular choices: 15 minutes (fast fulfillment), 30 minutes (balanced), 60 minutes (relaxed).
Choose Which Edits to Allow
Toggle on the editing features you want to offer:
Setting | What It Does |
Allow address edits | Customers can update their shipping address. |
Allow quantity changes | Customers can increase or decrease item quantities. |
Allow variant changes | Customers can swap to a different size, color, or other variant. |
Allow order cancellations | Customers can remove all items, effectively cancelling the order. |
Allow discount codes | Customers can apply discount codes they forgot at checkout. |
Allow order upsells | Present recommended products customers can add to their order. |
Allow adding Onward protection | Customers can add Onward Checkout+ (shipping protection). |
Tip: Start with the basics — address edits and quantity changes — and expand from there based on your customers' needs.
Configure Upsells (Optional)
If you enable upsells, you'll also need to:
Set a universal discount rate — Offer a percentage discount on all upsell items (0–100%). Set to 0% for no discount.
Select a product collection — Choose a Shopify collection to feature. The first 9 products from this collection will appear in a carousel on the editing page.
Step 3: Go Live
When you're happy with your settings, toggle the Go Live switch to activate Order Editing for your customers.
Once live:
New orders will include the "Edit your order" link in the confirmation email.
Orders will be held from fulfillment during the editing window.
Customers can access their editing page using the link.
How the Editing Link Reaches Customers
Once Order Editing is live, the editing link is automatically included in:
The Onward order confirmation email — A section titled "Need to edit your order?" with a direct link to the editing page and a note about the time limit.
The Shopify thank-you page — If configured, the link appears on the post-checkout confirmation page.
No additional setup is needed to deliver the link — it's handled automatically.
Post-Setup Checklist
After going live, verify everything is working:
Place a test order on your store.
Check the order confirmation email for the "Edit your order" link.
Click the link and confirm the editing page loads with a countdown timer.
Try each enabled edit type (address, quantity, variant, etc.).
Confirm changes are reflected in your Shopify admin.
Verify the order is released for fulfillment after the editing window closes.
