Teacher How To: Adapt a Lesson

This guide walks through how to adapt a lesson plan to customize or personalize it.

Written by Robin Abbott

How do I adapt a lesson plan?

  • Locate the activity card you want to adapt within the lesson, then click the three-dot menu on the right side of the card.

  • Select Adapt from the pop-up menu.

  • Fields that can be Adapted:

    • Activity Title

    • Description

    • Preparation

    • Instructions (Select the +Add button or modify the existing text)

    • Adjust Preparation time and class time.

    • Select or unselect Learning objectives.

    • Key concept(s)

    • Stage of a lesson

    • Select/Unselect Can reuse materials

    • Add Materials, Attachments, and Links using the +Add button in the Materials list.

    • Enter any Additional notes or comments in the respective fields.

  • Click Save. The adapted activity card will no longer appear blue and will display the note, in red: “This activity is an adaptation of the original version.”

How do I attach a file to an Adapted Activity?

  • Under Materials, select the +Add button.

  • In the pop-up window, navigate to the File tab. You will see four options: Upload files, Create Google Docs file, Import from Google Drive, or Create Google Slides file.

  • Select an option and follow the on-screen guidance, which will walk you through to completion.

  • If you choose Upload files, either click the plus (+) sign in the pop-up or drag and drop the file from your desktop.

  • To change how the file appears, type a new name into the Displayed name field.

⚠️Important: Do not select Protect this file on any option. This setting is reserved for PDP use only, and selecting it will prevent you from printing your attachment from the activity.

If I have adapted an activity, can I still see the original version?

  • Your Adapted Activity lives in the space where the original activity was located, so the two are not displayed at the same time.

  • To access the original, hover over the three-dot menu on the right of the Adapted Activity card.

  • Select View the Original from the pop-up menu to see the original PDP version while keeping your adaptation.

How do I discard my Adapted Activity?

  • Hover over the three-dot menu on the right of the Activity card and select Revert to Original.

  • Your adaptation will be replaced by the original PDP activity.

Do adapted PDP lesson plans remain private or can I share them with others?

  • By default, an adaptation is private—only you, the teacher who made it, can see it, along with your PDP Digital and Edusfere administrators.

  • You do, however, have the option to share an adapted lesson. This is especially useful when a substitute teacher steps in: sharing lets the sub view the lesson and print any necessary attachments. (See “How do I share a lesson?”)
