How to configure what displays on a template based on defined conditions
The conditional formatting feature allows increased control over what data displays on document and design assets when exported. The feature allows you to set default instructions accompanied by additional if/then conditional instructions. This feature is commonly used to mask confidential elements of a record such as a client name, logo, or transaction amount.
Users must have Admin or Elements Designer permissions in order to access the template design window and apply conditional formatting to templates. The below example shows how to insert a conditional layer and edit the associated conditions. In this example, as a default, the client logo will appear on the tombstone. However, if the client is marked as confidential in the record, the conditional block will display the client’s confidential name.
1. | In the template, click Insert Conditional Layer under the Layers tab to the right of the screen |
2. | Drag and drop the default field layer into the default block (in this example, it is the Client Logo field) |
3. | Hover over the conditional block and click the pencil icon to show Edit conditions |
4. | Add the if/then conditional instructions |
5. | Once all conditions are added, click Done |
6. | Insert the field you want to display when the conditions are met to your template (in this example, it is the Client Confidential Name field) |
7. | Drag and drop that field layer into the conditional block and remove any fields you do not want to display (in this example, Client > Company name and Client > Logo)
Pro tip: Select the Condition Block to easily view the fields on the template canvas that will appear on the conditional layer. Once selected, you can replace or reposition fields to display when the applied conditions are met. Select DEFAULT, to revert back to the default configuration. |
8. | To add another conditional block with the same default value, click Add conditional block
Pro tip: Conditional blocks can be renamed. Simply click into the Conditional Block to enter a name. |
Grouped and Nested Conditions
How to apply grouped conditions for more complex display logic
The Elements App supports advanced logic using grouped conditions, allowing Users to define more complex if/then rules. This is helpful when multiple conditions need to be evaluated together before displaying a field or image.
For example, you may want to display a U.S. flag graphic on a tombstone only if:
The Deal Type is “Buy-Side” or “Sell-Side”
And the Client Country is “United States”
And the Deal Value is greater than $500M
To configure new logic:
Open the conditional block and click the pencil icon to open Edit conditions.
Add conditions for Country and Deal Value using AND logic.
Click + Add condition group to create a nested condition set.
Inside the group, add conditions such as: Deal Type is Buy-Side OR Sell-Side.
Click Done to close the grouped condition dialog box.
To modify existing logic:
Open the conditional block and click the pencil icon to show Edit conditions.
Click the Condition Group button (shown in green) to open the grouped condition dialog box.
Change as needed and click Done to save
Pro tip: Conditions added outside of a group follow a single logical operator. Use groups to segment conditions logically and clearly.
This feature gives Users flexibility to tailor what appears in a document, based on multiple data points within a record.
