Understanding Synced vs. Non-Synced Group Chats

Learn the difference between a synced group chat tied to a club group and a non-synced chat you create manually, and how that affects exiting, removing members, and editing.

PLAI has 2 kinds of group chats, and knowing which one you're in changes how a few things work.

Synced group chats

A synced group chat is created automatically the moment a club group is created. Its membership always mirrors that group. If someone is added to or removed from the group, they're added to or removed from the synced chat too, automatically.

  • You can't exit a synced chat. Since your membership follows your group membership, the only way to leave is to leave the club group itself.

  • Removing a member removes them from the group too. If an admin removes someone from a synced chat, that's a single action, they lose access to both the chat and the parent group at the same time.

  • Editing the name or description updates the group. Change the synced chat's name or description, and the parent group's name and description change with it. You'll see a confirmation modal warning you about this before it saves.

  • The chat photo can't be changed independently. It's inherited from the group profile.

Non-synced group chats

A non-synced chat is one an admin creates manually, separate from any club group, like a coaching staff chat or a parents' info group.

  • You can exit anytime. Non-synced chats work like any other group chat: open the chat menu and tap Exit Group Chat.

  • Removing a member only affects the chat. It has no effect on their club group or club membership at all.

  • Editing the chat only affects the chat. Changing its name, description, or photo doesn't touch anything else.

Note: Look for a sync indicator on the chat profile to tell which type you're in.

FAQ

Why can't I find an "Exit" option on one of my group chats?

That chat is synced to a club group. Your only way out is to leave the club group itself, since chat membership follows group membership automatically.
